I've only gone and broken my new camera.

I came home from the beach last night after looking for the decent moon shot, switched it on.. and the word "Access" came up on the screen. By the looks of it, the camera cant push out the lens.. so ya hear it trying and then a message comes up saying turn it off and on again.

I only bought it in June while in Dubai so I've a feckin Asian warranty.

    Now what..

If as Victor says, sand has gotten into the camera, it could be a cause of the problem. I'd expect to hear some grating or other noise when you turn on the camera though. Maybe give Sony tech support a call to see if they have any ideas?

I wouldn't go mentioning the sand to them though ;)

Never know they might fix it for you for free even though it has a Asian warranty, depends how you approach it all...just say you have proof of purchase :D

I have W30, I understand they are similar from my recollection of the leaflets.

Very occassionally (maybe 3 times in a year and 5000+ shots) it will go a little wonky. Turning it off and leaving it for a few moments sorts it out.

Try repeating the same having removed the battery.

Is the battery charged? I imagine the motor needs a certain amount of juice.

    Are the battery contacts OK?

would it be covered under your house insurance?

it might be the perfect excuse to upgrade too

they're fairly cheap aren't they, just buy another one if you just don't want the hasle of phoning people and sending it away, of course you might still want to do that if money is tight

Check your battery. Access is a weird error to get with sand. If the battery is ok, the lens is probably jammed with sand. Tech support can't help you with that, you'll have to send the camera to a repair shop.

Ah yeah.. I bought it in a huge electronics shop and it was legit alright.

    A happy ending!!

I took a chance and sent it back via the usual channels.. registered repair facility sent it to the main one in Cork. They looked at it, fixed it, and sent it back saying that it was covered and no charge to fix it.

They put a new lens unit into it. Happy days!

Where did you send the camera back to in Ireland Trotter?? I dropped my Sony DSC W35 over the weekend and the telescopic lens is buggered. It was a 3am drunken picture taking moment and the lens is now bent and cannot retract. I was on the Sony website and all they have is an English address to return it to and they want to charge me GB£114 to fix it on top of the postage costs. I'd sooner return it to an Irish repairs shop as it might be quicker and easier to keep track of.

The camera was a birthday present from my better half by the way and she will cut the b*lls off me if she finds out i broke it 1 month after getting it....

I went to the local Sony centre and they gave me the details of a small electronics repair shop who then sent it away for me!
