Motorbike reg plates?

Got stopped by a member of the gardaí yesterday - couldn't get me on speeding, so he decided to pull me in and check anything and everything.

Did the usual, asked me was I insured, checked the tax, all was up to date. Then he had a look at my reg plate - The Number/County/Year is perfectly visable, but he had a problem with the fact that my county name was not displayed in Irish, underneath the Address of the shop that the bike was purchased in.

In any case, he gave me 10 days to get a new reg plate and bring it to the station for a "check-up". Which to be honest really doesnt suit me, but theres no arguing with the gardaí. Unless you're a tinker, anyway ;)

Is there really a big issue with reg plates displaying the county in Irish? Anyone else ever get pulled up on this?

Stick an a4 piece of paper over the reg plate with the "reg number" ;);) written on it.

tell them you saw it on the back of a truck and presumed it was the new format.

Whether you think it's a big issue or not is up to you :) but it IS a legal requirement and the Garda would be well within his rights to have you charged.
The fact that they hardly ever do this even with blatantly illegal plates on cars or bikes is neither here nor there, your plate is not legal.
Cars (used to) fail their NCT because of this, now a sticker with the Irish county name is given out instead - maybe you could get one of those?

Incidentally any plate with stick-on numbers is not legal, they must be embedded into plastic or pressed into metal.

The sizes given are for cars and trucks, on a bike you are allowed to have a plate half the width and height and with the lettering reduced accordingly.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

easiest thing to do is drop into a motorfactors, I got one done in halfords for a tenner, and it only takes five mins to do.

I replaced mine as soon as i got my bike, cos it had stick on numbers and I dont like advertising!

And besides, you dont want to give em any reason to annoy you!

It is story's like this that confirms the fact that the "Gardai are complete pricks". Who other, than complete prick would pull a biker on such a stupid charge. bunch of ****, the whole lot of them.

Why don't they try and do the job they should be doing, like getting drunks drivers off the road or catching robbing scumbags and drug dealers.

what a waste of time they are. ignorant and nasty.

Thats a bit harsh. I can think of lots of times I have been let off by the guards.
I have a blatantly illegal plate and have been just told to get a new one.
Yesterday I drove down a bus lane right past a guard who just looked past me.
Also, I know its not illegal but most guards don't check my tax and insurance at checkpoints.

    Maybe I'm just blessed :).

They are not all like that. Some are yes, its human nature.
For instance, yesterday i was driving home on the new N6, the one that branches off from the M4 motorway. Anyway i was clearly speeding, as was the car behind me. I was doing about 120 to 130 kmh. As i got to the Rochfortbridge exchange i saw a garda car on the bridge. Instead of jamming on the brakes i just exited (as its where i live) and approached the roundabout. I waited for a car to pass and as i headed towards the town, the garda car started to move around the roundabout. I thought he would come around and pull me over but he dissapeared.
So either he went off down the R400 to Rhode or he went on to the N6 towards Kilbeggan and maybe went for the car behind me which was actually gaining on me so going faster.
Maybe he let me go as im a local, or maybe they were sitting having a donut. who knows?

    Interesting thread!

What's the legal position where the county in Irish doesn't match the county of registration? I bought my new bike in Dublin, and the shop put Baile Atha Cliath on the plate, but it's got an LH reg as that's where I live.

Should I be looking for a replacement?

Naw, I doubt there is a national database of all vehicle registrations and their counties, and if there is watch out for the garda transit van carrying around a giant green ledger.

Er, they wouldn't need that, just look at the letters on the plate and see if the county name matches!

The whole thing about having a legal requirement to have writing on your number plate which no-one can read if more than a metre away and which gives no useful information is ridiculous. You can thank the usual Irish language lobby gobsh*tes for that.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Just noticed my own plate doesn't have the county written down. But of course does have a large area devoted to advertising the bike shop I got it in.

Will wait until I have a run in with a gardai having a bad day me thinks before I change it out.

No way would I advertise any bike shop on my bike! It's worth the few quid to get a proper plate done up, they're much nicer looking.

I don't think there's litterarly: "... name of the particular county which is displayed in english shall be displayed in gaelige and vice versa. No other name than of this particular county shall be written on number plate..." Or something like that.

So if you driving, let's say Cork reg bike, but you have some sentiment about let's say Dublin, you should get away with Ath Cliath over "C" reg.
    Anyone knows?

You need the name of the county in irish on your plate? In my twenty seven years I have never heard of that before and I have to say it's one of the stupider things I've heard today.

At least on a bike you won't fail an NCT over it - one of the Motors mods had this happen to him  :D and yes it is totally retarded, but there you go.
