REQ: Cheap DivX Player

Brother has just discovered the joy of watching Divx / Xvid videos... but sick of watching them on his computer.

Am looking for a cheap and cheerful Divx / DVD player for him. Doesn't even need the DVD player functionality - just something he can hook up to his TV to play videos.

I don't need a 320GB / 500GB external hard drive.. so maybe a Divx player which will play off disc will do.

Thanks for that dabbler. Should have done a search alright!

Plustron one sounds great.... reckon it's long gone from my local Dunnes though i know they have the Plustron DVD Recorder back in there for 99 euros.

Anyone know of any other offers currently ongoing?

    Says in the Technical information:
The XS-520 Pro also supports numerous formats including MPEG-4 for videos and JPEG for images.

MPEG-4 is a codec used in both XviD / DivX so i presume it will - strange it doesn't seem to advertise it at all, except for the small print.

Whoa whoa whoa... might just wanna wait til we get another two opinions on here before going ahead with the purchase.

I've been wrong about this sorta stuff before.. so mull it over til the morning. You might get another few responses on here either backing me up or telling me i'm talking outta me arse! ;)

Though i'm pretty sure it will!

well i read a review about this player on the net...
some guy saying he had a sony which played only 10% of his divx.. so he sent it back.....
then some other leading brand that played like 50% of his divx... so he sent it back too..
then he got this one.. and said it played absolutely everything...

Cheers, i'm pretty sure it well.

Oh, and not suprised regarding the Sony player anyways.. the Sony DVD players are unbelievably fussy. My brother bought a top-of-the-range Sony DVD player which claimed to play CD-R / DVD-R's etc. And yes, they will. As long as the CD / DVD media is Sony's own expensive optical media. Mad!

Yeah, might get this one for the brother actually. Cheers for the link Tiesto.

actually just after noticing now it says it plays :
divx MPEG1/2/3/4, and doesnt mentiond xvid..

But the 50 euro version of it plays :
    DVD/Divx 3.11, 4.x 5.x 6.x/Xvid

    so i dunno
i was thinking of going for the 50 euro version but then with delivery its 63 euro and no longer cheap... if u can get one in dunnes for like 40 squid...
but im guessing they are sold out now...

    Watch out for Lidl offers.

I bought a Silvercrest DVD player there two years ago.

    Play DivX, VCD, the lot.

Can use CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW on it. One of the best things I ever bought.
