The town of Suhl, Germany has a long tradition of manufacturing shoulder weapons, which goes back to the 16th century. In the year 1898, the Merkel brothers founded a gun factory which was the first to manufacture over and under guns in an industrial way. The Merkel factory grew rapidly, and in 1914 their production line introduced side by side shotguns.

New ownership of Merkel Hunting and Sporting Guns

Acting Managing Directors Olaf Sauer and Adrian Ayad will lead the company



The Abu Dhabi based small arms producer Caracal International LLC took full ownership of the Merkel Jagd- and Sportwaffen GmbH, Suhl, Thuringia, and its distribution subsidiaries, including the US-based distributor Merkel USA, Inc. as of June 27, 2007. The acting Managing Directors Olaf Sauer and Adrian Ayad will continue to lead the company at its headquarters in Suhl. The two Managing Directors had led Merkel Jagd - and Sportwaffen GmbH back to growth path after difficult times. Since 2003 the company saw a revenue growth of more than 70 per cent, new jobs were created and investments in new production facilities, product development and marketing positioned the company well in a global market environment. The General Managers plan to further pursue growth targets. The headquarters in Suhl will be maintained and the growth strategy will be continued. Olaf Sauer: "The traditional gunsmith city, Suhl, offers good conditions to further support the company's short and mid term goals in the German and international hunting and sports gun markets".

Dubai: Caracal International, a light weapons manufacturer based in Abu Dhabi, said it has bought 150-year-old German gunmaker Merkel.

Established 150 years ago in Germany, Merkel owns a series of weapon production and distribution companies for different types of hunting guns. The company has a staff of about 200 employees, and produces classic and modern state-of-the-art light weapons based on the most advanced weapon industrial technologies.
