    Hi all,

I'm trying to figure what I can do with this image. It was taken around dusk, so was quite dark. I made a few exposures, but all have come out a bit too 'bright' or else way too dark.

The original and my attempt to edit are below. I guess I'm trying to recapture the 'warmth' of the original scene, if that makes any sense?

    Original:
    F4364EF2D65A42DBAAB8C0008F98C53B-800.jpg

    My edit:
    96C517FCBB18428D80BDF571916F2BD6-800.jpg

    BTW image was taken on a 350D, ISO400, f5.0, 1/25th second. I also have the same at ISO100, f18, 2sec, but that's really dismal!

Oh, also the edits are being done in PS Elements 2.0.

    Any advice much appreciated.

    Cheers

    BW and more misty.
And to go there another day. I've been there three times and I have good pictures only from the last time.

    heavily tweaked...

EDIT: If you are there on time, parking is free and you can get closer. Another road to the right is to the parking.

I hope you don't mind, I did the following with it:

    1) upped the contrast a little
    2) converted to black and white
    3) applied a deep blue filter, while keeping luminosity
    4) applied a black frame to kill some of the whiteness of the sky.

If you don't like it, I'll delete...

Damm! No fair! It's like another shot entirely! It's nothing like what I saw at the time, but I really like what you've done with it. Thanks for the advice. I've too much to learn on this processing lark!

You said you took a few exposures. Was it on a tripod? Maybe you could do a HDR with them.

Yeah, it was on a mini-tripod from a stone wall, but I doubt the shots would be a close enough match. Still, no harm in trying. I know I read something here a while ago about doing HDR, i'll give it a shot after the weekend.

    Thanks for the advice 5uspect!

Did you take the shot in raw by any chance ? If so , from a single image raw , pull a -1 exposure , a 0 exposure and a +1 exposure , and try making a HDR from those , or just try tone mapping from a single raw shot.

If you have the raw it should be no problem to make a warm and colourful shot from the picture above.

    Thanks for your help all.
@mathias - Unfortunately it was shot in jpg. I really should just invest in more memory cards....
@sheesh - thanks much for the link to the tutorial. I'll have to get full PS to work it though I think! :( I like your conversion though, it gives it a nice warmth all right.

Used a gradient tool to give a warm feel to the sky and background. Upped the saturation a bit on the boat.

Good idea, that's pretty nice. I tried using a black/white gradient on the sky, but not a coloured gradient. What was that, white to some sepia type of colour? The B/W gradient made it worse, but that adds a lot to the sky tone.
    Thanks for the idea there.

I just went to the reds/browns and picked something that seemed right. I used a gradient adjustment layer and transparency a bit.
