Other Peoples' Lives

Not a review as such, but a recommendation.

I've just watched "Other Peoples' Lives" and it's in my top five list of all time favourite movies. I think it won an Oscar last year for best foreign film.

The amazing thing is that I read recently that it cost only €2million to produce, and I thought Pulp Fiction was a bargain at $6million. Compare and contrast with 'Waterworld' ($175million) and 'Battlefield Earth' ($103million).

I think we could be seeing a slow renaissance in German cinema. Three of my favourite films of the past 5 years have been German language, including 'Goodbye Lenin' and 'Der Untergang'.

It went under 'The Lives of Others' here - yes, a fabulous film.
Sadly Ulrich Mühe died in July.

His performance in that film is a masterclass in cinematic acting. I don't think you see the guy's teeth once!

I saw "The Lives Of Others" in the Screen Cinema, Dublin a few nights ago. One of the best films I've ever seen. It should be mandatory viewing for anyone who professes to love cinema. What a pity that Ulrich Mühe has died. His performance in the film was stunning.

I liked the film, although overall it was a little too pat & 'uplifiting in a fake way' for my liking.

I've ordered it off Play based on recommendations. I've not seen it yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
