So, what think ye? I'm not painting any of my own pieces, just wondering what your opinions mays me. Especially after Crazyrabbits Kryloning a FAL comment. (Paint over a unique serial number?!! The madness!!)

There are only two instances I've ever seen where I thought it looked good.

    1. Any L96 MUST be green. Same with any AUG. Is it just the way it has to be.

    2. This baby. Which I posted here before (My god, it actually makes an armalite look good ;))

    m84m4.jpg

Sorry to anyone who has painted anything, but as an artist (har har!) I find most patterns I've seen very very weak. Even those done "professionally". To the point of ruining the look of the AEG. If you're going to do it, PLEASE put the effort in like in the pic above and make some good stencils.

Apologies for the ranting nature of that post. :)

A Steyr AUG must always be OD-green, otherwise it just looks plain wrong!

That's a pretty funky paintjob alright. One of the Predator lads has a rather nicely done M4 as well. Not as intricate as that, but it doesn't look half-bad!

Personally I think your entire collection of AEG`s should be taken from you if you do the above :) Keep them original, but thats just me!

I'd agree with you in that as I was saying, a lot of paint jobs I've seen look pretty bad.

    BUT.

If the effort is put it, it can look really good. I was going to attempt the above on my FAMAS a while ago as it's an ugly looking lump anyway. so I couldn't really have made it worse ;) I think that pattern would really suit it. Would take away the plastic finish too.

It's just a matter of printing out a load of photoshop "splat" type stencils and layering them up.

Looks like a base coat generally sprayed on then the patteres stenciled on to it after.

Watch the flick shoother, he uses leaves to mask when he sprays his rifle. Lots of practice on other objects first I reckon... :D

Most definitely. Practice till you know exactly what you're doing and then really go for it. Fear the paint and you're going to destroy it.

    Just keep repeating -

I will not fear, Fear is the mindkiller, Fear is the little death that brings total Oblivion

And if you do happen to mess it up, well..that's what they have black Krylon for ;)

Ah the internet. Can't quote anything sci fi related without having someone pick it up :D

Not a fan of the mp5 myself either. mp7 on the other hand...

Edit: actually I see you were talking about spraying the mp5. Can't say I've seen that done before.

MP5's are the bee's testicals, but paint jobs on them sound like painting a pistol, crap. MP7 is lovely, ERU got them recently but very small.

They do black and OD pistols but I always thought they looked like someone mixed up the parts!

Is the top one a .308?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 8,679 Mod ✭✭✭✭Rew

.223, other is .22lr then the USP is 9mm and the Sig is .22lr

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,877 ✭✭✭liamo333

    I thought .223 was restricted.....

Nah, not at all people get funny ideas about firearms licencing. I had no probs getting it and a decent ammmo allowance.

Better not post up pix of one's RS in here, or o1s1n will have a fit!

(nice setup Rew - I'm more of a "traditionalist" myself. Don't have pix of mine handy anyhow :( but linkies to info about my 3 RS rifles are here (for regular use), here (for when the germans come back) and the best for last: here (for my retirement fund))

    Anyway back to Krylon ;)

Scheduled to go over some time in September, so I'll take pix then and post them up in that lil' Boards corner of yours :D

back to Krylon indeed - and funnily enough, I had exactly the same train of thought as o1s1n re. kryloning a Famas. Which is why I'm ogling JG's, currently cheap as chips on RSOV or Gunner, yet reportedly doing the business - from a review on a FR forum, sounds like it's a very decent AEG, but the outer finish is really sub-par = prime candidate for a 1st experience!

anyway i did quite many paintjobs for friends (m14's and vsr's mainly ) but nothing as nice as the first pic of this thread, really cute thing:p

Wanna paint my vsr? Do you charge?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 306 ✭✭davvowl

into what color / pattern ? do you have krylon ? :p

edit : no i dont charge. to me, repairs/custom works/paint jobs are just as fun as skirmishing itself :)
all i charge is the spare parts i need and/or the parts that i make.
well if i spend 20 hours on a custom work, it would be nice if i get something in return
but c'mon. how retarded is it to charge for a simple piston replacement ? (well, you pay for the piston of course)

Well I have 2 cans of OD on the way but I think I'll get some more colours. What would you reccomend?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 732 ✭✭✭chalky

I'm planning on painting the original body on my M14 as soon as I get a real wood kit for it. I was actually thinking of doing something along the lines of what was done in the film shooter

what camo do you have or like ?
with an OD base you can get a tigerstripe-like stuff, or something like dpm.
what you need is one bottle of med brown and one bottle of black

    Yeah sure

Would a MARAPAT pattern be possible?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,659 ✭✭✭CrazyRabbit

    G3 - SG1

    Before:

    After:

    th_94099_100_0548_122_600lo.jpg

I'm quite happy with the paint job. Krylon just doesn't like right on smaller guns though.

Don't see why not. Certainly more difficult and you would need pretty good stencil work.

Anything is possible. All depends on whether you have the patience or not ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 306 ✭✭davvowl

yeah of course marpat is possible (its just gonna take alot more more more time than full od :))

well i will be doing an m4 but i will be doing it with tamiya paints as its easier to age...have an airbrush already...

will probably do a desert scheme...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 306 ✭✭davvowl

    krylon > tamiya

    fieldtested.

yep...but i have tamiya...easy to get, greater array of colours...and it works in the gear i already have. i have used spray tins before (not on aegs mind) but i prefer air brushes for accuracy and fethering and since i have a testors one already and a compressor...i will stick with the tamiya...but thanks for the warning...

what krylon needs is a nice khaki, their current "tan" is too much like sand..

well here is what i what i am planning.. tamiya or one of the other makes for models and you can mix colours and then a coat of dullcoat another model 'paint' that takes any shine off it...that will waterproof it and toughen it a bit...but i am looking for a beaten look..so the sooner it wears the better for me..
