Avoiding conviction

Hi, I'm a 21 year old science graduate who was recently caught by the gardai at the ****** music festival with a small quantity of cannabis. I am just wondering does anyone know what I could do to reduce the chances of me getting a conviction. This is my first offence and before anyone makes their minds up I'm not a druggy or anything else. I have never been in trouble before. I suppose I was letting my hair down after a hard year after which I finished top of my class. I am starting my phD in october. I am really worried as a drug conviction would just about ruin my career. All i want to do is look forward and concentrate on my phD and career and put the past behind me and will never touch drugs again. I hope the court will see sense in being leniant and not convicting me but if anyone can help me with any advice I would be grateful. Thanks, marcus.

If you are willing to spend a couple of years doing a PhD, surely you could spend a couple minutes reading the forum Charter.

You can't get legal advice here. Consult a solicitor.

Get a good lawyer, and you may get a slap on the wrist, depending on how much you got caught with, etc.

Go to court without a lawyer may seem the cheap thing to do, but do so only if you want to get f**ked in the ass whilst in jail.

I can share my own experience of a similar situation, but it's no guarantee that the same will apply in your case.

Back in '91 I was caught with a very small quantity of cannabis (enough for 1 spliff). I refused to tell them who supplied it and so they went ahead and pressed charges. The case went to court and I had a solicitor represent me. I had no previous and the judge ordered that I pay £25 to the court poorbox and applied the probation act (no conviction). It basically amounted to a small fine and a warning.

Like I say, there's no guarantee that you'll experience similar, but you should really go and speak to a solicitor about it (you may qualify for free legal aid, depending on your situation/means).
