audio problem on PC

    Hey all,

This is a recurring problem that I've been having but it's become a major one now.

I haven't been able to get the audio working through the line-out port on my PC for ages; that wasn't a problem because I was using my stereo for sound (it has a USB connection). Now I've gotten a laptop and my brother has taken the PC but the aforementioned issue means he hasn't got any sound at all (for the record there are two ports - one on the front and one on the back... the headphone sockets don't work either).

I've tried the usual - searched for new drivers (the existing ones were realtek '97) and uninstalled/reinstalled the ones we have to no avail. I don't think the SC is screwed because I fixed the problem before (can't remember exactly how), it just manifested itself again later on... TBH I think the USB device's drivers may have interfered with the standard ones in some way or told the PC not to use them... I don't know.

Anyway - any suggestions on other things I could check or other drivers I could use would be much appreciated - as you can imagine having a PC without sound is a bit of a pain in the arse.

Is there any control panel that lets you configure the sound ports on the pc? For example on my pc I have a realtek control panel and I can actually go in and choose what each port is used for.. I could have three line in's if I really wanted to for example.. there ususally isnt a shortcut but in mine its at C:\Program Files\Realtek AC97\RTLCPL.EXE on the speaker configuration tab..

Yeah, found that panel but it doesn't seem to make any difference - it's really more of a levels configuration etc.

    Thanks though.

    *bump*

I remember last time I had the problem someone here gave me a run command that opened a window, in which I could enable certain functions that the computer had (for some reason) disabled... that time I found that audio was one of them and when I re-enabled it it worked fine (not sure if it was on the USB or standard speakers, mind you).

Anyone know what I'm on about here?
