Was he hard done by, or is he just a tool that deserves what he got?

Maybe this deserves a poll - unfortunate, or just a tool.

Little harsh tbh, but then again most countries have different ways at looking at things.

I think the suspended prision sentance was too harsh, especially given the fact he was locked up until recently.

In fairness, he went over to help their bloody street children and they put him in jail for what has to be the most trivial crime anyone's ever bothered to punish since dancing got you a day in the stocks in Calvin's Geneva.

The punishment this man recieved was too harsh but he needed to be punished because of what he was doing there, he had an obligation to behave in a responsible manner. Its not the end of the world though, the amount of people u see "mooning" after a night out:rolleyes:. Im divided on this one.

Well he made his first mistake by actually being in Africa. Theres nothing there for you. its a miserable place altogether whatever your intentions. The whole place is a bloody mess. Partly westerners faults up until the 70's then their fault after. Blood sucking vampires hollowing out their own country, those in power of course.

Second mistake was entering a muslim country whos belief system are well.... stuck in the 1800;s.

Bravo for doing a runner. I hope we;ve all learnt a lesson from this incident

    What?
If this was a foreigner here, everyone would be baying for blood.
See Roma/ Nigerian threads for examples.

He broke the law in that country and was punished accordingly.

For what? Mooning? Give me a break...

Who are they hurting exactly? Sure they are being immature but what 19 year old in a foreign country with their mates isn't going to be at some stage? Lighten up.

I've no problem with people mooning.
I've done it myself, on occasion.
However, the Senegalese authourities do have a problem with it and he did it in Senegal.

There are certain people who ritually circumcise baby girls in a brutal manner. This is illegal here. Do you think they should get away with it just because it is acceptable where they come from?

I do realise that I have given an extreme example of differences in laws, but you see where I'm coming from, right?

At the end of the day, the guy broke a local law. It doesn't matter if it's partially acceptable here (get caught mooning an embassey here and you would probably recieve a night in the drunk tank and a small fine at the most), but it's not acceptable there.
How are we supposed to get people to accept our local laws if we don't accept theirs?

Fully agree with the above. The guy broke the law and was properly punished for it, according to their laws.

I heard on the radio earlier that he had done a runner. Was this just exageration, or did he actual run?

I still think he should have to do some community service over here when he gets back to apologise for shaming us like that. Stupid twit!
Hope they told him he won't be allowed back into Senegal again once this has all been dealt with.

He was a bit of a tool. But how can anybody say that the punishment mathched the crime. It was a bit harsh.

By our standards, yes. But our standards are irrelevant over there. So many people don't understand/realise that what's OK over here isn't OK in other places. If you break another country's laws you can't bitch about how you'd get away with a slap on the wrists at home. You're not at home.

In fairness though, if I was him I would have done a runner too. In fact, unless I break the law in another EU country (and perhaps the US and Australia), then I'm probably going to head for the nearest airport and go home.
