    Hey,

I'm off to Japan for 3 weeks in October with a friend. We're planning on hitting Tokyo,Kyoto,Osaka,Hiroshima,Himeji,Miyajima,Nakone.

Just wondering whether or not to visit okinawa. Have any of you been? I presume the best way to go would be by flying and then renting a car over there. The thought of war monuments and tropical surroundings appeals. It seems like there's not a huge amount to see though, also we'll be stuck there for a set amount of days if we've flights booked. what do you suggest?

Maybe an alternative would be to get the hydrofoil from fukouka to busan for a few days. Anyone been?

I was in Okinawa in April and loved it. It's practically tropical, so I'd say October will be pretty nice. If you can make it for a couple of days, I'd recommend it (3 weeks is not very long to see all the places you mentioned though...)

Okinawa's got its own culture, kind of a cross between Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese influences. I found the people to be very friendly, and much more relaxed than on the mainland. Might be an idea to visit at the end of a trip, for a bit of unwindage on the beach.

yes, I'd recommend it. I visited Miyako Island and it's very different from the rest of Japan. It has a sub-tropical climate, lot's of nice beaches, coral reefs and great food.

While looking for the Okinawa link, here's one to Kyoto.

    mostly pictures, infact ALL pictures.

Here's Okinawa. Looks like he got a guide. I visited on my honeymoon. We took a tour.It included where the Japanese hid out when their military leaders committed suicide but ordered the civilians to never surrender. Operations performed in caves without anaesthetic. Eeek. Went by outside of US bases. Bit of a blur now.The cat thing on the rooves is an Okinawan tradition. Oh yeah, we went to the Castle, (Shuri Castle)where the G8 summit was in ... 2001, the one with the stripy courtyard.Chinese influences here, except for the underground (tourbus) carpark which I didn't photograph to my disappointment afterwards!

pick whatever you want to look at. The fella who owns all the pix used to live there for a few years, but is back in Canada now.

Recomend Miyajima, it's like going to Bray on a Luas from Dublin, only from downtown Hiroshima.
