How long the pill takes to work? I am going on it from when my period comes (should be friday or saturday) and am sexually active with my boyf but was wondering does it take a full month to like build up the resistance or does it start working straight away?

    Thanks for any info

That info will be in the explanatory leaflet that came in the packet, even if you are primarily on it to clear up your skin.

use other forms of protection if you are unsure about the pill

    what i was told;
if you take your first pill on the first day of your period, you are covered at once. if you begin taking it at any other time, you have to use other contraception methods for 7 days to be sure.

all this info should be in the information leafet with the pill.

Read the info leaflet in the box and follow those instructions.
    Use a condom as well.

Surely this would have been a question for the doctor who prescribed you the pill? If you forgot to ask at the time ring them back and ask them over the phone...Are you really going to trust anything written here enough to stake your chances on it?

This sounds right. Make sure to use a condom for the first 7 days.

Also, read the leaflet to in the pill pack and make sure that you know in what situtations the pill will not cover-if you are physically sick, antibiotics, stomach upsets, etc.

Thanks for all the replies guys, the doctor is a family friend and him and my dad go way back so was too embarrassed to ask (said the pill was for my periods etc)

I did read the booklet that came with it just wanted to be double sure

    Thanks again!

There is such a thing as doctor patient confidentiality.

Always be careful when you're on the pill! It may say you're covered straight away, but I have been told that if you have irregular periods you may not be covered and should use extra protection for 7 days.

Remember - better safe than sorry!

If nothing else, using a condom for the first week or two will put your mind at ease and make you feel better.

On an aside, if you don't feel that you can talk to your doctor, you need to find a new GP. Now that you're on the pill, you need to consider regular smear tests and based on what you said about your GP, it sounds like you won't be looking for one there.

EDIT: emphasis added as this is an extremely important consideration for any sexually active woman

That was a bit silly. As far as i know different pills work better for different things, eg. some pills are better for periods, skin, whatever. You really shouldnt lie to your doctor of all people.

Do not presume it safe to go rutting like a March hare. You asked for a treatment to control your menstrual cycle - not for an effective contraceptive.
If you are uncomfortable with the family doc you should find another doctor and ask for what you want. YOU MUST BE HONEST WITH YOUR GP IF YOU NEED HELP.
