Last week I got a plane from Birmingham to Ireland. Waiting in the line at the check in desk I was trying to think had I anything in the bag I was bringing on board that I shouldn't have.

Removed my deodrant and leatherman, put them in my rucksack.
All fine. Went through airport security, bag is x-rayed. No probs.

I was packing my bags tonight for my trip tomorrow when I found a sissors in the bag i brought on board. It is 4inches long. Surprised it was seen by airport security.

If it is easy to get a sissors through, then I sure it would be easy for someone to get a knife on board.

    Meh.... thats all.....

I was getting on a plane from Barcelona to Dublin earlier this year and the guy at the x-ray machine was actually asleep!

Good job as I had just purchased to rods of uranium from a street peddler named Yuri.

Or at least I could have.

what are ya gonna do with a knife though?
MAybe a cleaver would get you through the cockpit door, but you'ld have to turn your back to the passengers, who would since about 12th September2001 rush and overpower ya. or maybe make a flamethrower with their lighter and 75ml deodourant spray...

Airport security is just to scare people into giving up liberty.

My experience goes the other way: in Dublin they confiscated my nail clippers.

It depends on a lot of things. The scissors could've been mixed in with a few other metal items. It could've been behind something that was denser and harder for the x-ray to see through. X-rays only capture one view of your bag (from above, not a 3D image) so the scissors may have been lying in a position where it would be impossible to tell that it was a scissors. Or maybe the security guy was just lazy and half assed about it.

Like I said, loads of reasons why it might not have been picked up.

I had a similar thing, back in 2004 I went to New Jersey .

When I arrived I unloaded my laptop bag to find a 12 inch long screwdriver in there ...... that was a deffo deadly weapon.

It gave me a bit of a start to be honest .

needless to say I put it in my suitcase for the journey home !

I am always amused ( saddened ) by the site of the things like nail clippers being taken , then you can go and buy a bottle of wine....... I would have thought a broken bottle would be a much bigger threat.

I think a lot of these security rules have no basis in fact but are there because they have to have rules. For example why 100ML of liquids ? , and you can a number of 100Ml bottles , but not one 250ML bottle

    Stupid !

I suppose the logic in something like that it is harder to make an explosive device out of 5x100ml containers than 1x500ml container.
