Problem installing SATA hard disk

Bought this SATA hard disk(250GB) a few weeks ago and fixed my computer. I am using Gigabyte K8VT800M as my mother board.

I see a exclamation mark on on the icon of "VIA SATA RAID CONTROLLER" in my device manager. It is not a question mark behind, so I guess the drivers are installed.

    The hard disk is running.

However, I can't seem to detect the SATA hard disk(Can't find it in disk management), is it because my motherboard doesn't support SATA II?

    It says here: http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/FAQ_Model.aspx?FAQID=1724&ProductID=1711&ClassValue=

If I have to change the jumpers settings, how do I do it?

    What OS is it XP?
It is more than likely just a driver issue try updating the driver to the one on the Gigabyte website or install disk for the mobo
Chances are it is just that XP cant see the drive.

Does the drive appear in the bios and is it the correct size in the bios

    It is XP.
I have already tried to update the drivers.

How do I check if it appears in the BIOS? do I go into the BIOS config screen? I don't see it there

go to the boot sequence. If it does not show up there,it has not been detected by the computer

May need to activate it. Right click on My Computer and select "Manage" then select Storage -> Disk Management. If the disk shows up here right click and select Activate then Format.

I fixed a problem just like this yesterday , funny how these issues come in bunches ,

Anyway , the KT8x800 motherboards use a set of SATA controller/chips that cannot sync with the speed of SATA II drives , this results in windows not detecting the drive , in some cases windows wont boot with the drive plugged in.

The solution is simple though , you put a jumper on the drive to lock the speed to 150Mbs and windows will detect the drive and it will work fine.

Look up your drive manufacturers website to find out where to put the jumper if its not already printed on the drive.
( Please note that no Bios upgrade will fix this , its a hardware issue)

Details on the SATA issue are here ,

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA

    Heres the relevant quote ,
    SATA-150 and SATA-300
SATA is designed to be backwards and forwards compatible with future revisions of the SATA standard[8].

According to the hard drive manufacturer Maxtor, motherboard host controllers using the VIA and SIS chipsets VT8237, VT8237R, VT6420, VT6421L, SIS760, SIS964 found on the ECS 755-A2 which was manufactured in 2003, do not support SATA II 300 drives. To address interoperability problems, the largest hard drive manufacturer Seagate/Maxtor have added a user-accessible jumper-switch known as the Force 150, to select between SATA-150 and SATA/300 operation[2]. Users with a SATA-150 motherboard with one of the listed chipsets should either buy an ordinary SATA-150 hard disk, buy a SATA-300 hard disk with the user-accessible jumper, or buy a PCI or PCI-E card to add full SATA II capability and compatibility.

I fixed a Western digital , KT8x800 combination yesterday , on a western digital drive the jumper goes on the opt1 pins on the drive , check your drive manufacturers site for details though, it will depend on the Manufacturer where the jumper goes.

My drive can be set to 1.5GB or 3GB and it is already at 1.5GB. cuda_sata_block.gif
The VIA SATA RAID CONTROLLER says "This device cannot start (Code-10)"

Quite simple this really. Go into your bios and disable your via raid controller. This should work.

Bummer , that is listed as a possibility ( jumper not working that is ) , so assuming no bios options work , your next step is a SATA controller board if you have a spare PCI slot.

Are you using a mix of IDE and SATA hard drives , if so are you sure that both are enabled in the Bios , check if both PATA and SATA are enabled. If they already are then its controller card time.
