Question Before Buying A PS3 Today!

Hey everyone. I'm planning on buying a PS3 today but need some advice quickly if possible. I don't have a HDTV, only a monitor with DVI-D and VGA connections.

Is there any adaptor compatible with the PS3 that can turn the component cables into a VGA or DVI-D connector. I want to be able to play the PS3 in HD just like I do with the Xbox360 at the moment (via VGA connection).

I'll probably be in town today but does any shop like Power City sell that kind of connection?? It would save me the hassle of going into town today.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

    Does your monitor support HDCP?

I have no idea. All I know is its a 20.1" widescreen Dell Monitor. I'll have a look for the specific model no. now.

EDIT: I think this is the model no. Dell 2005FPW 20.1"

2005FPW does not seem to support HDCP, they added it in the model after that (2007FPW).

So is there anything I can buy to get the console working through my monitor??

Your monitor would need HDCP to game with the PS3 in HD.

I've been doing some reearch and does the monitor not just need HDCP for HDMI??? From what I've read a TV/monitor doesn't need HDCP if the PS3 is run via component.

So is there a component -> VGA adaptor available to buy anywhere. Out of interest, why was no VGA cable released for the PS3??

I meant to game in HD with the PS3 you will need a monitor with HDCP - and let's face it, this is the big reason for getting a nex-gen console.

Dunno why they didn't include the vga cable, to keep costs down maybe? Give Peats a ring, they might be able to help.

    2 possible reasons

    1) Digital Vs Analog combined with 1920 x 1080 (native resolution of PS3) being right on the edge of noise-free VGA capability so they may not think it was worthwhile.
    2) They have always seen/put forward the PS3 as part of the living room where HDMI is a more acceptable standard for televisions than VGA

You can get HD resolutions in games from component, and HDCP has nothing to do with that..

If you can get a component->VGA adaptor, you should be OK I think.

    Well according to wikipedia...

"If an HDCP enabled player is connected to a non-HDCP-enabled television set with a non-HDCP-compliant analog connection (VGA or Component), and the content is flagged, the player will output a downsampled 960x540 pixel signal. If using non-HDCP-compliant DVI connection (with HDMI to DVI cable), the user will not get any picture at all."

I know it refers to tvs, but surely the same principle applies to monitors.
