what do you do with these after you learnt the patterns..also do you have to know each note as well or just the pattern. like how do you use them once you can play them?

It depends what kind of music you're playing really.

But the jist is, say you're playing to a song that has a chord progression. You can choose a scale that has all the notes of the chord progression in it and land on the chord tones within the scale as the chords move along.

Eg. Em:C:Bm:F#m/Bm ...Over this you can stick to an E minor scale.

Or you can use different scales over a chord progression while landing on the chord notes as you move through it. So notes that aren't in the chord are only hit briefly as passing notes to the chord notes.

    Eg. Em:C:Bm:F#m/Bm
...Over Em you can play E melodic minor
Over C you can play E harmonic minor
Over Bm you can play E blues
Over F#m/Bm you can play E mixolydian

    Don't hesitate to ask questions.

Don't just learn the patterns. Learn the scale inside out, what notes are involved, why they're involved etc. Also when practicing the scales, don't just run the patterns up and down, you won't learn them very well that way. Vary them, maybe play them 1-2-3, 2-3-4, 3-4-5 up and down, switch notes around, make music :)

no. 1 advice is to learnt he notes on teh fretboard... makes theory 100% easier to apply to the guitar, instead of patterns
