Using two Internet Connections

I just got broadband yesterday after my 4th week in Portugal, I had been using a 3g Connection for the previous weeks and it wasn't as reliable as broadband and ended up costing me much dineiro when I got disconnected in sng's at just about the worst possible times.

Anyway having 2 connections is something I've thought about getting for a while and in my case the cost of a backup connection would have paid for itself umpteen times over with all the disconnections of the past.

I was playing around with it in low limit tables last night on Everest and IPoker. In Everest it picked up the new connection reasonably shortly, though I still didn't get back quite in time for the hand I voluntarily disconnected from. I was however back in time for the next hand. Ipoker did not detect the new connection at all, I had to restart it and then I got the old chestnut, 'user luckylucky is already logged in', I had to try a few times before I got back in.

I'd think there might be a few full-time or serious part time players on here with back-up connections, just wondering if any of ye have managed to configure them in such a way that they work in a more seamless way?

And have you noticed it works better with some sites than others?

have the same setup. broadband and 3g.... tried what you were talking about but didn't work for me..

I only use the 3g when something goes wrong with my BB or I'm out and about.... maybe it's harmless but didn't want to be sitting 12 hours a day with a mobile pone connetion running next to me

Was reading a 2p2 thread yesterday about multitabling, general tips, etc. and an essential for all serious tourney players was an auxiliary dial up connection to save you when deep in the million and eircom decides to be all homosexual on you.

Edit: Direct link to the correct post. sorry.

I was trying it out running the two connections together and then disconnecting the broadband, it still didn't pick it up automatically i.e. the connection still dropped. When I just had the broadband on it's own and disconnected and quickly clicked on connect for the 3G option, it seemed to work around as quick as having two connections open. So basically, like you say it looks like just to have the other one on standby.

I think the main value of this will be for tournaments. Though it might manage to get back in time on some sites which give you extra disconnect time for a cash game hand.

I couldn't find it where it said about having an auxiliary dial up connection in that post.

I also heard a second internet connection can come in handy for those serious tournament players.

A load balancing router with failover won't work as well as the remote server will see a change in IP and probably kick you (for what you are doing , it'd basically be only an automated version of what you did )

What you need is to bond the lines (pref. from different ISPs) together with failover , so the (eg) Ipoker server sees the same IP from your end even if one line dies on you.

The most painfree/least hocus pocus method I can think of is to get a little box for your end ( ~e60ish) and plug your pc and both dsl modems into it.

Not a fan of some of Party Poker's practices but credit where it's due. When I tested it there and opened the back up connection, it detected it very quickly and I was back well before the end of the hand.

Here is a bit more about what i was on about :
If you have 2 connections to the internet , you could get a small server ( tiny will do) in a datacentre and bond your connections back to that. The traffic/load would be tiny so you could share it between a few lads.
To bond it at your end you'd need a small router ( e60ish) . If a meteorite hits the datacentre the router will failover to one line .

See the attached dodgy diagram ( only had paint etc).

    Cheers for the info Bushy.
In regards to my internet connections...
I'm no expert but I think you need 2 adsl connections to bond, I've one adsl and one 3G connection or am i mistaken?
The option to bridge connections is available for the adsl connection but not the 3G which is just seen as a dial-up connection.

Also where's the dodgy diagram? :)

Here's diagram_dodgy_v1.0 , the two links don't have to be the same speed , I suppose getting it to work with 3g would be good to save you another phone line etc.
Those domestic routers that take a 3g card might work if plugged into the other port i'll do a bit of digging tomorrow
