Used to be a hotel website called Turquoise.com or something like that, which did Parisian hotels. Used it a few times and they were fine although they were only 2* hotels. I stayed near Montmatre once and its a good location to see all the sights including the Moulin Rouge, but i can't remember any of the other areas i stayed in. As long as there is a Metro nearby you be ok.

Have just booked this hotel for myself for my next trip, was recommended to me by a friend who stayed there recently. Gets V good reviews on tripadvisor as well.

I've been to Paris many times, I find the best place to stay is a place called Montparnasse; its only three metro stops (3mins) from the Latin Quarter (notre dame etc) which is the best place for nightlife, plus it only costs about 5euro back in a taxi!

Because its a little bit out (though you wouldnt notice it with metro) the hotels here are much cheaper, I usually stay at the Timhotel Montparnasse, its basic but the rooms are bright, clean sheets/towels etc, the four star hotels are not worth the price as no matter how much you pay they will all have tiny little rooms.

Plus Montparnasse has a cool shopping centre and plenty of breakfast places!

Check out www.parisby.com - excellent hotel site. The Latin Quarter (5th) is a lively, central area as is the 4th. Hotel Parc St Severin in the LQ is very well located on a quiet side street and reasonably priced about €140. Staying in the 4th, 5th or 6th (St Germaine - a little more expensive) ensures good nightlife and restaurants within easy walking distance.
