Camera trouble

Mods sorry if this isnt the right forum. please feel free to move if needed.

    Camera: olympus mju 725SW
Memory card: Fujifilm H1GB XD card

So I whipped the memory card out of the camera there last night to transfer files to the PC. Put it in the card reader and went to view the pics but it turns out that any pics ive taken in the last month were not readable. This was strange as I could still see them on the camera when I had the card in it. So I put the card back in the camera and, shock horror the camera just beeps now and displays "card error" on the lcd display. Ive tried reformatting the card in the camera but to no avail, the activity led flashes for about 2 seconds (hardly enough time format the card!). tried reformatting it on the pc, when that completed I put it back in the camera but still no luck. I seriously hope its the card and not the camera!

    Anyone have a similar experience?

www.recuva.com or other rescue software is probably your best bet.

Simplest thing is to try another card in the camera, they're cheap too so if you don't know someone else who has an xD card, just buy another for a few quid - you'll use it some day. These cards do die from time to time, unfortunately it's to be expected once in a while. Formatting on a camera should usually only take a couple of seconds - it's just a quick format. Did you try a full format on the PC? A full format rewrites every block of the card, not just the bitmap and filesystem descriptors, so it might fix the problem or else give an error.

as has been said, it's almost definately the card. Had that happen to me with an SD card not too long ago. Check the warranty on it, you might be able to get a replacement. If not, buy another and give that a go. I'd be surprised if it's the camera at fault.

Yea,it was a full format. I just did it with windows, you know right click, format. It had been formatted to FAT, so thats obviously what I tried reformatting it to. Is that recuva app just to get files off a flaky card? If it is this will hardly work now after the card being reformartted? thanks deadalus that was my first thought aswell, just to try another card, but il more than likely have to buy one because I cant think off hand of anyone I know that has one.

    Edit:
    Rymus.

Yea the the camera seems to works fine when the card is out. It has some (very small) inbuilt memory and I can shoot pics and save to this no problem.

Yep, it is a piece of recovery software, pretty good too, and free.
Format the card in camera rather than via windows in future though.
