get spy ware doctor to clean it up.

Poker sites can leave alot of crap on your computer, especially Party and Pacific Poker.

Can you give us some system specs like operating system, RAM, etc? If you've had it a while then it may be time to do a fresh install. Otherwise try CCleaner, Spybot Search and Destroy (for malware/spyware) and an anti virus scan (AVG, avast! or Anti-Vir all have free versions that are pretty good).

click on start and then on run type in msconfig and o.k

go to the start up tab, you probably have too many progs loading at start up, untick all non- necessary start up applications, but be careful not to untick your anti-virus or firewall software.

I find the likes of MSN mesenger and especially AIM bog the pc down when restarting, do as above and set it to not run the IM programs on startup, AIM actually makes mine freeze alot on startup so i got rid of it.

if it was a sudden change in performance it sounds like a virus! did you download anything recently?

best thing i find in this case is to download hijackthis, google it.

Run this programme and remove any obvious spyware items, they will be in the search section etc.

Remove yahoo and google toolbars or any other rubbish toolbars like hotbar etc....

    Update your antivirus definations.

Start the laptop in safe mode i.e. press F8 while it is starting and select safe mode..

Look at the AV settings and set the full system scan to delete problem files..(not sure what programme your using in norton this is set with the scan actions button)

REstart and this should help a lot, if you want to post up the hijackthis log i can tell you what to delete, PM me if you like

I had the same problem for about a year and found that removing 2 things cured the problem.

1 I removed Nortan antivirus and replaced it with Mcafee... seemed quicker.

2 my laptop is an Acer and it has it's own programe called empowering technology to manage power settings and I disabled this in msconfig and it was perfect after that... used to take about 4 mins now takes 30 sec to boot

Get a good AV program. loads of free ones such as AVG, NOD32. Set it to autoupdate everytime you're online

Get a few Spyware Apps - Spybot Search and Destory is probably the most widely used and is decent.

Get some anti malware - I use Ewido though there are loads of good free ones out there

    Get Adware, again free

Get a firewall. i think ZoneAlarm still do a free one.

When logged into Windows, go to run, type msconfig and then press enter. Then go to the startup tab and see if there's any entries that shouldnt be there. If you google the names of entries you'll fidn what are safe and what are spyware.

Alternatively, get HijackThis and restart your laptop with that running. It'll find any dodgy entries
