Have just moved house and am off the busroute to work now, have to walk nearlyy 2 miles (i know its not far, but galway gets a little wet in winter). Any suggestions as to where i can get a cheap on either online or in any stores around Galway...

Smyths in Blanchardstown had them on display last week. You can check if your nearest store has them in stock on the Smyths website.

Was in Halifords over the weekend, they had a special offer on a bike, €85, quite a good price I think. It had front & rear disc brakes, 18 grip shift gears.

Can any one tell me, are the disc brakes any good? I want something reliably rather than flashy. Are they messy, how often do pads have to be changed, how difficult is it to change them, etc.. ? Which (disc or normal) brakes are the best to go for?

I work in a bike shop and to be honest I would stay away from those bikes around the hundred euro mark, what you really want is a rigid frame(no suspension) and either rigid or suspension front forks, you would be able to pick up a nice bicycle for around 250euro. Mechanical disk brakes are terrible and expensive to fix you would be better off with just v-brakes. Also if you buy from a bicycle shop the bicycle would be assembled properly where as if you buy one from dunnes, etc you have to do some of the assembly yourself, I have fixed many of these dunnes, supervalu, aldi, etc bicycles and alot of them are assembled wrong and just fall apart.

Please don't buy one of these OP. They're unreliable (my gears seized after 3 weeks), they are assembled badly and dangerously by teenagers and they weigh a ton.

I regret the day I bought one.
I think you'd be better off spending €200 and getting a good bike from a cycle shop. Some stock second-hand bikes too.
