Ah it was great. Richard O'Brien done the show for 4 series and then it was Edward Tudor-Pole. Some of the contestants were as thick as planks I'll give you that. :)

Annoying? It was one of the best shows on tv at the time, and still one of my all time favourites. Richard O'Brien was a legend, and while it did go downhill a bit when Ed Tudor-Pole took over, it was still better than most shows.

that was a great show. the sandy zone was my favourite. what were the four zones called?

Industrial, Futuristic, Aztec and "The one in the castle".

That's so true, alright. Here's an old Punt & Dennis sketch where they take the piss out of the really thick 'Crystal Maze' contestants! :D

Ah, what a great show. Mmm Richard O Brien. He was fired wasn't he?

the four zones were futurisitic, industrial, aztec and medieval, with industrial making way for ocean zone in later series.

richard was a million times better than ed.

have to love that theme tune too!

there's a report from a contestant on the show there, quite interesting!

Hehe, also remembering the look of despair on their faces when they get locked in. :)

You know, its still on! I think its UKTV or UKTV gold.. one of them. On everyday i believe.

Excellent show when i was a kid, it all looked so COOL... still sort of does. You do not get gameshows with such amazing looking sets these days.

Its a bit like Takeshi's castle though... almost no one wins it. though they did get a nice crystal :D

Ha! I always watched this show on Channel 4, right after Gamesmaster. I saw on Channel 4's Top 100 Quiz shows that one of the TV crew said that when the contestants got locked in a room they litteraly stayed there all day long. So if one got locked at about 10a.m. they wouldn't be let out until filming stopped at around 5p.m. :D Excellent!

I am still obsessed with this show. I want to start a campaign to bring it back. It's my lifetime ambition to go on it. I always wanted to when I was all growed up but now it's gone! At xmas they had a kids one and I always wanted to go on that too. I was away on holidays a few weeks ago and we had challenge tv in the apartment. I got up earlier than everyone else for the whole week to watch the crystal maze at 10 before going out into the sun....ah, good times.

A lot of information on how the show was made can be found here. http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/tv-channels/challenge-tv/285418/
Was surprised to find out that the team were complete strangers to one another.

That was great. i always wondered did they have to stay in the room all day and how they shot the game from all angles..... very interesting!

Dead interesting to think how different it was!
"Did they really make you stay in the game room all that time?"

...to shower and dry off and then spent the time that I am locked in watching Blackadder videos in a port-a-cabin.
I couldn't stop laughing at this bit!! The indignity of it all: "Now GET IN THERE and SHUUUUUT UP!!!" *Slam!*

A class show, Richard O'Brien was excellent. Certainly one of the best shows on TV at the time.

Classic show - dared to be different.

I'm guessing you all know the host Richard O'Brien was the creator of the Rocky Horror Picture Show?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

He also played Gulnar (very well too) in Robin of Sherwood. :)

I love the Crystal Maze so much!

The contestants were such geeks tho!

Saying stuff like (when they got locked in)

    "Rats...double rats!"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,786 ✭✭✭✭Hagar

If you liked that watch out for the French version Fort Boyard. Much more physical.

BTW RO'B played a role in and owns the "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".

    Same here.

Was playing crazy golf in the Pirates Cove in Courtown the other day, walking between holes the crystal maze music kept going through my head, very like the Aztec zone.

Apparently there's a crysal maze game you can actually be in in Dubai. My friends's bf went to it, she reported it to me immediately because we're both big crystal maze fans...... we know where we going on our next girls holiday anyway!
