Yes, you keep your old box. You can use it in another room.

Sky+ and Sky HD both need two cables as they have two tuners. Because part of the rceiver in sin the LNB on the arm at dish, the coax can't be split for muliple receivers. The LNB has to have separate outlets and copax to each "tuner".

Quad feeds four
Octo feeds eight
Quattro feeds 2 to 1000 via a Multiswitch and optionally distribution systems.

two cables are required in order to allow you to record one channel while watching a seperate live channel. Sky+/HD boxes have two cable inputs on the back.

I just got a letter from Sky yesterday with an offer. It was €69 for the box + something like €45 installation.

Don't know why they're offering it to me. I'm on the most basic package paying about €20 a month.

I've had them about a year and maybe this is a way of getting me to sign a contract for another year (I was thinking of cancelling because of constant poxy ads, I hadn't told Sky that yet though).

Joined Sky last sept and thinking of upgrading to Sky+ when my 12month contract is up.

My question is do you still need to be connected to a fixed phone line for all the features of Sky+ to work ?

The reason I ask is that I am sick of paying line rental, taking it out switching my broadband to Three's 3G offer

Not fair! I got a letter about Sky+ yesterday too but I'd have to pay the full price for the box. Exactly the same as you. Had it since Feb of last year and on the basic 2 mixes.

Dunno why I'm special. It is €69 +€45 in the letter I got. The number in the letter is 0818 719 835 (doesn't seem like a special number, when I rang I got all the usual options for billing, new installations etc.).

I rang them to order it but you do need a phone line. I got rid of mine during the year so I can't get Sky+. Back to plan A so.

They pick people at random it seems...but new offers usually begin in September usually..so who knows what'll happen..will have to wait to see.. but I'd expect it to increase in price rather than decrease.

I think you can still get sky+ without a phoneline, ring them and ask. Of course, they'll charge for the privilege but I think it's something like 25€

Get Sky+ and record what you want to watch, then FFW through the ads! We do it all the time. We hardly watch anything live! ABC is the worst for ads, about 10mins every time they break. With Sky+ you can fast forward at up to 30X speed!

I got it for a hd box a few months ago. (got the hd box on ebay)
no extra cost either.

The way it works as far as i can see is as follows

€169 for the box.

AND another €40-odd for the installation

UNLESS

You get SKY MULTIROOM with it. If you get sky multiroom you don't pay the extra 45, you just fork out another €15 per month.

Here's my question~: I already have a basic sky box. Suppose I want to get a SKY+ box but I want THAT BOX in a bedroom. Thats the SKY+ in my bedroom. Can I use the SKY+ box like it was a multiroom box??? Or do the bastards have me either ways??

You must have got a different salesperson than me. I emailed their customer support and I rang them. Both had the same results. So I'm cancelling. The ads on Sky are really annoying. They synchronise their stations so they all show ads at the same time and there seem to be too many of them. I've gotten used to channel bittorrent and TV is just annoying when you get used to that.

I have the Sky+ feature also without a phoneline. When you buy your box outright, and not through Sky (subsidised), you don't need to connect phoneline.

Is there any way I can get SKY into my bedroom {and keep it downstairs too} and watch different channels WITHOUT involving SKY or Sky products. I've heard tell of this being done in some way. As it is I have another SKY box and a satellite.

Also:

In the event that I stay with the SKY method, is there anyway I can get theSKY+ box installed in my bedroom and basically keep the basic box that is downstairs, thus circumventing the SKY+ monthly recurring cost.

Digital senders will just send the same channel to the second TV.

You'd still be stuck watching same channel on both TVs

You could wire up the old Skybox to the dish, and receive Free to air channels, but you'd get no PayTV channels.

Hi byte, my brother introduced me (well i coaxed him really) to sky & got the sky+ free, but now the sis in law is whetting her lips mischievously at mine :eek:
so as a precaution how/where did you get yours as they dont have a phoneline either! & will the cost of it be more than E225 all in getting it from sky

I bought mine on eBay, and installed it myself. IIRC, I paid €160 for it second hand.

Looking back on my Paypal record, it was £87 Sterling including postage, and it included quad LNB also.

The database error was down to issues with the boards server.

IIRC = If I Recall Correctly.

Thank god for that, shock's over now that's saved me a bit of money

It seems to be one shock after the other, it seems that my sky+ was acting up today instead of recording an hour prog it went on for 482mins when i came in before 8 i saw the red light on & thought im not recording anything & taking up 16% of the 21% (busy trying it out) of which i needed!

Have you come across this at all

You remove the single LNB and replace with the Quad. You'll need to run another CT100 cable from LNB to where SKy+ box will be, as it needs 2 feeds.

Then, after you've confirmed that the system is working, call Sky, and get your card re-paired to your new Sky+ box, and have the Plus features activated.

Well, you'll know it's working if channels work! Also, check Services, Sys Setup, Signal Test to confirm both tuners have signal.

And yes, use existing feed for one of the inputs (unless you aim to keep original box there too).

As you'll only have used 2 ports on your quad LNB, that leaves 2 spare, so you can cable up the old box to another room too for maybe free channels.

Now.....you wire up the electric eye.

CAN YOU NOW watch something off the SKY+ box IN A DIFFERENT ROOM to what the people {downstairs} are watching?? In otherwords, they watch TV in the regular fashion, while you tap into the "+" aspect of the box??

Also:

How does the SKY+ box work? Suppose a film starts at 9pm can I watch the first hour at 10pm. By 11pm, will the 2nd hour be ready for me to start watching??

No to the first question - I think you'd need multiroom for that which is of course, extra €€€.

2. If you have set the film to record you can start watching it whenever you like, ten mins in or one hour in and it will of course keep recording till the end - you would have to be on that channel and have instant rewind set to 60mins to do what you want to do without actually 'recording' it. (if that's what you meant)
