Ok so I just got the e-mail about registration and it mentions that I can also pay for membership of the "City Centre Club" at the same time as I pay the reg fee. In previous years I paid the "bar membership fee" which was annoying but at least I knew what I was payin for!

Can annyone out there tell me what exactly is the bar situation in DCU this year? I thought the old bar was being done up by the SU to the tune of €500,000? Is City Centre Club the sexy (ahem) new name for the old bar or what?

And most importantly of all will the blessed institution that is €3 tuesday return to us in DCU this year?

From what I hear Shadowless jeger n red bull/Jameson n ice will still be available on Tuesdays for a reasonable price but moved across to the....wait for it...nu-bar.... Yes that’s right people not new ... nu- .. Ah ya gotta love that shower a clowns that run the place!! The old bar will apparently be closed down...the last SU prez was pushing for the re-vamp but it wasn’t happening...anyone know what it will be used for?? I heard a rumour that it could be used to host non-alcoholic events!?

I’m presuming the city centre rubbish is the same as the bar membership fee....

Yep, City Centre Club is just the name of (DCU-owned) company that looks after the bar. Odd title though.

Would someone mind posting the piece of the mail which has that bit about the City Centre Club?

the city centre club is what you always had to join in order to be a member of the bar. It's just that nobody called it that so no one realised that's what they were joining, everyone just said "join the bar"

    Here you go...
The new academic year starts on Monday 24th September 2007. During this
week, you may collect your new Student ID card. The Registry will have
printed all ID cards in advance and your card will be waiting for you if
you have correctly registered online (for both your Qualification and
your chosen modules) and paid any fees due. When registering online, you
will be asked if you would like to join the *City Centre Club*. If you
choose to join, the fee will be incorporated into your fee liability. If
you choose not to join, no fee will incur, however should you change
your mind, you will only get the opportunity to join after the second
week of term, in the Registry customer service area.

the city centre club is what you always had to join in order to be a member of the bar. It's just that nobody called it that so no one realised that's what they were joining, everyone just said "join the bar"

I see. I wasn't aware of this tbh and I thought after all the rumours circulating over what's happenin with the bar I thought this was something different.

Is it confirmed then that the old bar is closing but that €3 tuesdays will return in the nu-bar?

    Sounds like the bar fee.

I haven't had official confirmation of what's going to happen but yes, you're almost certainly right in what you've said there. The old bar will most like only be open for big events like the summer ball and all.

Was the old bar run by the SU and the "nu" one by this company, or were both run by the same people?

Over the last few years the Old Bar was owned by the college and run by Power Management whereas the Nu Bar was run by TriSpace who are, of course, owned by DCU itself.

According to myk@redbrick {JOIN REDBRICK} the agreement came to an end and Powers didnt want to renew and Trispace took over. They will apperently open it for large events and possibly if clubs and socs request/pay barmen's wages..

    JOIN REDRICK

How much to join this 'bar'? If you join, what benefits do you get? Are you not allowed in if you don't join?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,808 ✭✭✭Ste.phen

nope, it's a club license they operate under which means they're only allowed to serve members of the club and signed-in guests. so, no membership, no drinkies.

But if you join redbrick maybe they will get a bar license - you wont know till you join up!
