PC wont start. Power & HD led blinking.. smell of burning

I shutdown my pc the other night and left it to restart
The next morning I got up and the PC was dead
Plugged it out and when I plug it back in, the power light and the Hard Drive access LED both blink on and off repeatedly

I disconnected everything, opened the pc and did the same. The processor fan starts to run very slowly inside but nothing else is happening. Bad burned smell :(

Would this be my Power Supply or motherboard fried?

If its PSU, anybody know what voltage readings etc I should get on what pins??

    Would appreciate any help

    Some more detail
    Its an emachines 820 P4 2.6
Seems the motherboards are not the best on these and also the PSU
Question now is, what motherboard would suit as a replacement in same case, or am I better to just pull the 2 hard drives and put in a new box?

Actually sounds more like the board then the PSU.

I had a power spike take out my PSU last month. PC did nothing when I pressed the power button. Got a loan of a PSU from a mate and it worked when rigged up.

Yours sounds like the PSU is working and turning on the motherboard only the board isn't initialising properly. You may want to disconnect your disks from the motherboard and PSU while you play around trying to get it working. Just in case the board does any damage to the disks.

If you got a smell then look at the capacitors on the board and see if you can find one that looks like it's ballooned out. If you find one then you know the damage is on your board. Look for any other signs of burning near components too.

Sounds to me like the PSU, emachines PSU's are not the greatest, I have been blessed mine has lasted 5 years now!!

Yeah. Looks like its the board alright after reading around
Slight marking on some of the caps beside the processor. Not bloated as such, but reckon they are gone. In the meantime, I have tracked down what I think is the board.

Just wondering if anybody knows of somewhere local to get one of these. If not, looks like I will have to wait a few days for that one
