Hi, I am looking for a bit of help. I am planning to hit america in a couple of weeks. I have my mind made up on buying a canon 400D. But I am looking for a wider range of lens to go with this camera. Too give you an idea I like taking Macro, landscape, buildings, night shots and people doing what they do with out getting to close. My budget is not huge about €750.00 for the lens. The cost of the camera is sorted. Any advice on maybe two or three good value lens would be appreciated.

a must have would be the 50mm 1.8 for under a hundred quid. If I was doing it all over again, I'd ge the Sigma 10-20 and maybe the Sigma 75-300

Id also invest in a set of extension tubes. It's outstanding what can be done with them in the right hands. It's a stepping stone to owning a dedicated macro lens I suppose... Welcome to boards :)

They are exactly the lens I have and I would recommend them wholeheartly to you to get you up and running.

If you are looking for an everyday carry-around lens that covers a decent range, I can highly recommend the 17-85 IS USM. I have one paired with the 400d and a half decent circular polariser, and it's rarely off my camera. Also can't pass up the chance to get the 50mm f/1.8. As everyone will tell you around here, it's simply a must-have. Those two will cost you around $650 max total which still leave you room to play.

Good luck with your purchases. You wont be sorry !

Conns have the new Sigma 18-200 Image Stabilised, Macro Lens in stock for about €475. One of my students bought this from them on Saturday and it's a cracker of a lens. It's ideally suited as a travel lens too as the reach is equivalent to about 29mm to 320mm on your 400D,

    Dave

I also have the sigma 18-200, its a great carry-around lens.
Only problem is the lens has a habbit of extending itself while you're walking around with it, although it does have a lock to prevent this.

I recently bought the Canon 24-105 IS, got it from Albert, Kea Photos for €766.00. Great walk about lens and having a lot of fun with it. I also have a 55-200 and have taken some good landscapes with it.

I look forward to seeing your photos.

As the man said. Given what you want to shoot, I'd prioritize the 50mm, and 10-20mm, though you's probably pick up all three lenses with your budget at B&H.

Proper macro lenses are very nice things, though a bit pricey. The Tamron 90mm f2.8 has a very good rep, and is (relatively) reasonable. Otherwise, the extension tubes that rymus mentions with the 50mm will be a good macro set, but with the focal length, you'll end up working very close to the subject, which isn't ideal if you want to take photos of bugs
