Tell me more about this Wii.....

The missus has had a go playing with her sisters Wii and decided that she wants one for her birthday, which is soon. To be honest I haven't a clue about it as I've not bought a console in years (since the crystal xbox came out) and the last Nintendo was the SNES. Mostly play PC games these days...

So been looking online and the Wii somes to be mostly available as the "Sports Pack". So my questions are:

    What is this Sports Pack?
Do this pack come with controllers for 2 people to play?
    Does it come with games?
What other "essential" accessories should I get for her?
She's played a bowling game and wants that again. Anyone know the name of it?
Any other recommended games (bear in mind she's not a gamer really - more the social aspect appeals)?

She's also played some sort of guitar game but don't know if that was for the Wii or not. I see there a "Guitar Hero III" coming out. I wonder was it the first or second one. All I know is that "Boston - More Than A Feeling" was on it. Can this be got for the Wii?

Any info would be appreciated..... haven't a clue here....

So been looking online and the Wii somes to be mostly available as the "Sports Pack". So my questions are:

What is this Sports Pack? - it comes bundled with the console, and is a disk full of mini sports games, nothing to in depth but good for multiplayer

Do this pack come with controllers for 2 people to play? - no you have to buy a scond wiimote and nunchuk, make sure you buy the one for the extra fiver, comes with wiiplay(more mini games).
Does it come with games? - answered

What other "essential" accessories should I get for her? - i didnt get anything else, u have the 'essentials' right there

She's played a bowling game and wants that again. Anyone know the name of it? - it comes on the wiisports disk, free with the console

Any other recommended games (bear in mind she's not a gamer really - more the social aspect appeals)? for women em - cookin mama, mario party 8 ...meh i dunno wat else..

    1. Wii Sports comes free with the Wii, and has Tennis, Golf, Baseball, Boxing and Bowling. Good fun and a good intro to the controls.

    2. No, just one controller set (1 wiimote, 1 nunchuk).

    3. Wii Sports is free.

    4. Another controller.

    5. Bowling is on Wii Sports.

    6. Maybe Wario Ware? Lots of mini games that use the controller in fun ways.

    7. Guitar Hero III will be out for the Wii at the end of the year. There are no guitar games on the wii at the moment.

also i recomend you buy wii play too you get a free wii controller with it and also the game which is better than buying a second remote on its own

Well, you can get Mario Kart 64 for the virtual console (downloadable) for (I think) 1000 Wii Points, which costs a tenner. Not sure if you can get the SNES original.

Nope, Wiiplay only has a wiimote.

Its a cheap enough console, but when you add in all the accessories..... :)

yeah - tell me about it - looking at over €400 for the console, Wii Play, nunchuck, and 2 games....

Yeah, i've roughly spent about €450 altogether over the last 2-3 weeks since getting mine (including the console). One other thing you might consider getting is a docking station for the wii remotes, as this will save you money on batteries in the long run. As pointed out in other threads, make sure you get one that runs off the USB cable into the wii, as some of them run off batteries themselves and are, essentially, pointless.

If you connect to the internet via the console, you can download old games for Snes, Megadrive, N64, etc. Check the thread "Virtua Console releases" on the Nintendo page here on Boards for a list of those that are available. They are a lot cheaper than the new release Wii games (obviously).

But unless you have a gamecube controller lying around, you'd need to invest in a "classic controller" too...

Do not bother with a classic controller, they will not work in every game.

They do not work in homebrew, for example.

Game stock GC controllers for €14.

A very very very small percentage of people will be playing homebrew on the Wii, so thats not exactly a valid reason not to get one.

If you want to play virtual console games, you'll need a classic controller or gamecube controller. I prefer the classic controller because its wireless (it plugs into your wiimote). Its only €25.

    The wavebird is also wireless.

Um, Gamecube games don't work with it either. I bet that will be a small percentage too, chief.

You said homebrew, you never mentioned gamecube. :)

To be honest, I think the original poster's missus is looking for the whole waving/shaking/waggling/jumping-up-and-down Wii experience, so this discussion about classic controllers is not relevant.

I saw one in my local XtraVision, of all places, for only €20.

I reckon I'll get the classic controllers also for the likes of Sonic The Hedgehog if we can download it (might come in handy for PES as well ;) )
