Does anyone know any alternative ways to get the wire(for the signal) into the back of the box, without the screw on thingy? I'm desperate here

I have tried it without the thingy(screw on) but no signal is received.

You need to connect both the centre of the wire into the centre of the connector, but you also need a good connection between the braiding and the casing of the sky box as this is used to power the LNB.

You can get a connector quite resonably that allows you to remake the connection without tools.

Also if the connection is not made correctly it may reduce the strength and quality of the signal from the satellite.

If it is a case you are desparate and there isnt a 24hour satellite shop nearby, you might want to take extreme care as poking the bare wires in to the receiver is likely to short the lnb power and could potentially cause damage to receiver or lnb. Without the proper connector you are unlikely to get a good enough contact between the outer shielding and the receiver input. Perhaps with some sticky tape and some aluminium foil but I wouldnt recommend it as a short could render your box dead.
The f-connectors are available in many hardware shops for as little as 50c.
