    Hi,

I'm starting a small website for myself and already have a domain name and hosting bought.

Unfortunately I don't know much HTML code and the online tools that come with the hosting aren't great.

I was thinking of using iWeb '06 to make my website but I'm unsure whether or not it can only be used to make websites for .Mac

Does anyone know if I can use iWeb to make a website and host it using a seperate hosting company, and if so, how?

    Thanks!

Yeah it's possible ok. According to the iWeb support site you just need to copy the folder containing you sites files to your hosts computer - or at least copy the files to the /html folder on the hosting site.

Yeah of course, there's just a few minor features that won't be available. I've come across several iWeb created sites on the net that weren't on .mac.

yeah you just design your site, export the folder to a local location on your Mac and then upload to your server space. Some of these sites can look nice but be warned, iWeb has some very very odd quirky things eg almost all text will display as an image, page urls and path urls and totally crazy in iWeb, and bascially you end up with what looks like a pretty page with the world's messiest code!! ;) nigthmare for anyone to try and read through, if someone was to read your page source that is.

Export the files to your hard drive, then upload to your hosting.

hehe! And you're telling me that I'm saying/posting things you have "already explained" ! Sigh!! ;) But let's not have post-ping-pong over it

Guess that was the short and sweet version.

My iWeb pet hate is that when you do publish to folder (so you can FTP to a non .Mac site), each page has it's media assest stored in a sub-folder (kinda like saving complete web pages in your browser).
    page1.html
    page1_files/
    page2.html
    page2_files/

The problem there is that most assets are the same (because of the template you're using), but each has to be download separately. iWeb is not known for bandwidth friendly templates either.

It is handy though for knocking together sites in no time, and is especially good at photo inclusion.

That does my nut!! So every image is indexed in a totally stupid way with the most complicated absolute paths imaginable!!! Drives me mad!
