I have an old pc, its a bit of a frankenstein really, was orginally a dell with windows 98 on it, but before i knew anything about computers it was upgraded, no idea whats the same on it!?

well any ways i was installing ubuntu on it today and the screen just froze(i dont think it matters but it was just loading up the partition tool) and after i reseted it nothing would come on screen any more. Its powering on, the fans are all going, its not giving warning beeps. Thought it might be the vga but i swapped it from one with another computer and it didnt help! Is it prob the mother board thats bricked? Anyone know where i can get an AMD(at least 4 years old) motherboard with AGP graphics and IDE hard drives! if it is the mother board gone and i cant get one as above ill practically have to build a new pc!!

Is it a Socket A? Try dabs.ie. I see they have one Socket A motherboard in stock for €40.95. Try reseating the RAM (or if you have two sticks, swapping them around).

Thanks Ruu! Really do appreciate ya taking the time to look! I think it is a Socket A , ill double check tommorrow. Just one stick so ill try re-sit it. If that fails might try the mobo.

www.scan.co.uk have a good range of old motherboard and cpu's, but im not 100% sure they have any Socket A cpu's. As for the dead pc try resetting the cmos. You can either do this by a jumper, or remove the small round 1€ sized battery from the mobo for a few mins and replace it.

Tried resiting ram, tried removing battery, still nothing. Even booted the thing up with no ram stick hoping for some warning beeps ... nothing! Its definatly not graphics card, cable or monitor. Am i right to presume its the mobo? anything else it could be, could it be cpu or ram? the mobo is an asus a7vbx which seems to be a socket a board?
