Canon kit lens upgrade

Need suggestions on a new prime lens - I've realised the 18-55mm kit lens that comes with the 350D doesn't really cut it. What alternatives are there out there, preferably for less than 300 bills? I heard Sigmas 18-50 (I think?) is a good move.

Prime lens are ones that have a fixed focal length!

What areas do shoot most in?

Whoops that was a big **** up! I want this one mostly for landscape - hence the 18mm - but i do like the fact that it's variable.

Why do you feel that the kit lens isn't doing the job for you ? If you're shooting landscapes at the wide end you'll be stopped down to f8 or f16 anyway, I'd wager you won't see a jot of differance in image quality between the sigma and the kit lens.

Some results aren't great with the sigma ,but it's more reliable than the kit lens.
I have the latest 18-50 2.8 EX Macro

    I was looking at a straight-up swap, Sigma 18-50mm for Canon 18-55.

I know that as kit lenses go, the Nikkon 18-55 smokes the canon.
