The Charlatans

I remember when The Charlatans started off. 1990 was a big year for them and I'm sure most people saw them as part of the Madchester vibe that would surely fizzle out after a couple of years. I saw them in the Top Hat on the Some Friendly tour, giving a good performance but nothing remarkable.

Surprisingly they have survived practically all their contemporaries and have created a solid body of work. Taken in isolation, their singles are thrilling gems, but digging beneath the surface of each LP reveals hidden depths.

My favourite is probably Between 10th And 11th. I hated it for many years but around the time of the Melting Pot compilation it finally clicked.

The last two LPs have been just ok though - somewhat lacklustre.

Yeah, it's struck me a few times too how they're still going after 18 or so years - remarkable considering their contemporaries. Some Friendly was the first non-charty album I ever bought (after all the Now That's What I Call Musics). It's a fantastic piece of work. After that, I lost interest in them.

Some Friendly was one of the first albums I ever bought too. Great album, loved Polar Bear.

Always found myself dipping in and out of their music, never a huge fan but a fan nonetheless. Us and Us Only is a great album though, some great songs on it.

really like the run of four albums from 'the charlatans' to 'wonderland' and also quite liked tim's solo album. one of the better britpop survivor's.
