Don't go into the bathroom

Amelia woke up feeling cold and disorientated, her body lying awkwardly on the floor. The teenagers joints felt unusually stiff as she pushed her self up into a sitting position and took a dazed look at her surroundings.

With immediate relief she surveyed the embossed white walls and high, beamed ceiling of her upstairs landing. Beneath her she felt the coarse red carpet which ran from the top of the stairs all the way down the narrow hallway to the bathroom at the end.

Though the light was off inside, she noticed the bathroom door had been left ajar while the other four bedroom doors, including her own were firmly closed.

The comfort of knowing she was somewhere familiar soon wore off as Amelia began to wonder how on earth she had ended up sprawled across the landing in what appeared to be the middle of the night. The last thing she remembered was going to bed and since she had woken up still clad in her nightgown, perhaps, she surmised, she had merely been sleepwalking. A plausible explanation considering Amelia’s history of insomnia.

Satisfied but feeling slightly ridiculous, Amelia decided get off the floor and back into bed before she caught a draft or, even worse, anyone saw her. She knew her brother Eddie would have a field day if he somehow found out she was sleepwalking again. Grabbing hold of her bedroom door handle, she pulled herself up, before quietly slipping inside the darkened room. As she lifted up her bedcovers Amelia’s cold nose tingled with anticipation, her entire body was freezing and she couldn’t wait to snuggle down under the thick duvet.

Climbing into bed feet first, it wasn’t long before Amelia found herself getting comfortable. Stretching out, she turned and faced the inner wall before sliding her right hand under the pillow. To her surprise she touched upon something moist and instinctively recoiled her hand.

Rubbing her fingers together, she wondered what on earth the smooth and watery texture could be. With her left hand she reached across to her bed side table and after a darkened fumble managed to locate her lamp. Switching on the light, it took a moment for her eyes to adjust before a sudden sense of shock befell her.

Laced across her fingertips was a dark red substance. Fearful, Amelia retreated back in her bed and with an anxious glare eyed base of her pillow. Slowly she got to her feet and stood staring for a few moments before eventually mustering the nerve to lean across with a shaking, outstretched hand. Quickly she flipped the pillow over, instantly uncovering the source of her unrest.

For a moment her breath seemed to catch in her throat before finally, in the dead of night, a piercing scream ricocheted through the house.

All of a sudden a loud splash was heard comming form the bathroom but Amelia was too stunned to move, her horrified eyes still locked in dispair as a pair of heavy boots began to trudge up the landing.
