Sky HD Box & Upscaling

I've a 1080p LCD and a Sky HD box. The LCD shows all Sky signals as that which I've set the HD output to be on the Sky box, i.e., 720p or 1080i even when the channel is a standard definition feed. Does this mean that the Sky box is upscaling the SD signal to 720/1080?

Yes, if you specifically set the definition to 720p or 1080i, it is upscaling SD signals.

Thanks. But I was wondering because the option is HD Output. No mention of SD. I'm looking at getting an upscaling AV receiver but i won't get full value for it if Sky is already upscaling SD by default or I can't tell it to send the native resolution.

A upscaling AV receiver will upscale all lower sources to the HDMI output, such as composite or S video.in your case you would be just looping the HDMI output from your SKY box to the receiver and then to the TV for switching purposes.

The receiver I have ordered will upscale via hdmi as well as upconvert. This one.

I don't want to feed it an already processed signal for further processing.

Sorry I am always slipping up my conversion for upscaling. upconversion from a lower source such as composite to HDMI and then upscaling from say 480i to 1080i, but as said your HDMI just loops through the AV receiver for source switching purposes. To the best of my knowledge the receiver does nothing to the original received HDMI format.

I posted earlier from work and from memory. I'm at my Sky box now and there are further options. Under System Setup > Picture Settings > HD Resolution Output there are 4 options. In addition to 720p and 1080i there's 576 and Automatic. When I set it to Automatic (it was 1080i) the TV reports 576 as the SD input and the SD channels are much better. This must mean the TV scaler is better than the Sky scaler. (Thinking twice about the upscaling amp now!). "HD Resolution Output" is a bit of a misnomer then.. looks like this sets the output for SD too.
