Just spotted this on Askaboutmoney.com and thought it might be of interest to some here. A €500+ lens for €290? :)

Not a hope of getting one ,I tried reserving it for order and it's not possible.

I tried 8 stores and the pre-order reservation just drops at the last minute ,with a not in stock try another store.

I picked one up in Liffey Valley this evening (8 pm). I had reserved it after reading the post on Askaboutmoney. First impressions are that is a quality lens and certainly a bargain. There is one in stock in Limerick. Check the online stock after midnight as I think uncollected reserved stock goes back into the system at that time.

    Hmm I'm just getting:
    Available to order for collection
    Thu 30th August - Mon 03rd September
    on every store I've tried.

Just opened a new printed catalogue and €289 is the price in that as well... so looks like it's the official price... I'll wait and see if stock arrives on the 30th.

    Personally I think it's a misprint. Argos.co.uk is selling it for £399.99.
It's too good to be true.

    expansys have it at €519.95

Is it just me, or for the last couple of weeks, theres almost nothing available in the argos stores whatever their stock management are at. (eh... non photo items that is). So, perhaps it will be worthwhile to keep an eye to when they restock - Cannon shooters that is! I wonder has there been a big boo boo in Argos pricing generally? (hmmnnn... off to check the Argos catalogue). Good luck.

Do canon do a non-IS version that argos may have confused it with?

Nice bargain to those who got it.

It appears the same lens for this price is printed in the catalogue in store as well. Looks like it's not strictly speaking a mistake, it's just what Argos have decided to charge.

A guy here in work got one there today, He's going buying a 400D and I recommended this as a good general lens to go for instead of the kit. He hasn't got the body yet so we tried it out on my 350D and I can confirm it's as advertised!

I might see if I can scrape the cash together to get one at the weekend.
    Sob, sob, poor student etc...

What store did he get it in??? I keep checking every now and then and it never seems to be in stock!

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 10,520 Mod ✭✭✭✭5uspect

Limerick stores, There's one or two still about...

where can i get the camera ? ebay?

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 10,520 Mod ✭✭✭✭5uspect

Its just a lens, an entry level canon SLR body will cost you much more...

Would this be a good general purpose lens yes?
Got a 400d last week with a 50mm and looking to get a wide/zoom lens..
I take it from this thread this is good for that purpose?
I may try and get one from argos down here..

Also, good chance its not a pricing error.. looking at amazon Price: $379.00... thats pretty close to 290 euro

Would make a great general-purpose/walkabout lens.. it's light, covers a good range, though might have to be paired with another macro lens depending on what you typically shoot (and probably reccomended with the 400Ds crop factor). USM typically means it's going to offer quickish auto-focusing, IS will help in low(er)-light circumstances. I think on this lens it only has a single IS mode though, so it's only going to help with static/slow-moving subjects.

    Some reviews here:

    http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-28-135mm-f-3.5-5.6-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx

If they come back into stock in any of the Dublin branches, I'll be picking one up immediately.

It isn't that wide at 28mm. The kit lens is wider but gets messy at its widest.

I'd say get this as a general walkabout moderate telephoto slightly wide lens and then save up for the Sigma 10-20 or a decent telephoto.

Kea are selling it for €295 plus postage, so we're getting a good deal here in Ireland for a change...

I paid 400 dollars for this lens in the states a couple of years ago , its a good lens , you get better quality photos than the canon kit lens but its not very wide , it ends up at , 45mm to 216mm , when the 1.6 crop factor is taken into account, Ive used it a lot for portraits /weddings and for that its fine.

As a carry around though , it will let you down when trying to get scenery , architecture , etc. On a film SLR its excellent.

I complemented mine with a 17 -40mm to cover the wide end and ended up using that as a walkaround way more than this one.

Does anyone know if Argos are going to be getting any back in stock? Or have they copped their mistake?
I'm very tempted to upgrade my canon 350d's kit lens. ;)

I reserved one in Swords last week aswell and picked it up Today, I was sure the price would have been corrected by the time they got stock in but it wasn't.

Great deal and very nice everyday lens, Can't wait to try it out Tomorrow.

    Thanks OP.. :D

In the UK at the mo, but still managed to get a family member to pick a reservation up in Liffey Valley yesterday... not a chance I would have paid the Argos UK asking price, but I'm a sucker for a bargain so am looking forward to getting my hands on it, still works out cheaper than ordering from b&hphotovideo + delivery.

Got mine yesterday in Stephen's Green. popped into Jessops on the way home (closing that day) and they were selling it for 654.99 with 20% off = €524.

Very nice lens and a great bargain, thanks Argos!

I know this is a gravedig but it should really make the people that bought this feel good,
I just checked the new argos catalogue, and the price for this lens was corrected, to 589!!! It certainly was a good deal while it lasted!

Ha I'm delighted :D There were still 3 left here in Limerick just before Christmas. All I need now is to find a good price for the 10-20/12-24.I don't think I'll bother getting the nifty fifty.
