Three laned, traffic light-governed roundabouts!

Just wondering, suppose you want to take the third exit on a three laned roundabout with traffic lights.

What are the correct lane positions that you should be in?

I'm thinking in particular of the Jack Lynch tunnel roundabout, the Kinsale Rd roundabout and the Sarsfield Rd Roundabout, all in Cork.

    Thanks for the tips!

Approach in the righthand lane, indicating right. When you pass the second exit indicate left and go off at your exit. This applies to any roundabout you're taking the third or later exit.

Yes this is the general rule - pity most Dublin drivers don't know it - but watch for road markings which may contradict [supercede] this rule. The Sandyford roundabout past the Beacon clinic at the M50 entrance and the Tallaght Bypass roundabout again at the M50 have lane markings which differ and should be obeyed when they are there.

Thanks. But then, what is the middle lane for??

Generally for straight ahead on a three lane, but again varies according to road markings.

The middle lane (coming from the tunnel) on the dunkettle and on the kinsale roundabout (coming from town) will let you take the 3rd exit aswell. Mainly because they come onto slip roads. It's all down to common sense and lane markings really. All the above roundabouts you mentioned are clearly marked so there's no excuses really. Just pay attention!

the sarfields road roundabout is not clearly marked at all.
if coming from kinsale road roundabout and you want to take the 3rd exit heading to Wilton the arrow on the right hand lane is point wrong, instead of a right arrow or straight arrow it is just bent and confusing , , every body gets in the middle lane and turns right to wilton when the middle lane is for kerry/ovens then they block up the yellow box , for a round about the is next to the driving test center there has been no planing to it at all .

What if the 3rd exit is a left exit, the 4th is right on, and the fifth and sixth are right turn?

You take the right lane and indicate right, to go straight ahead?

The way i have always thought of it, is to ignore the roundabout, and pretend there is a junction there.

When entering, you take the appropriate lane to go ahead, right or left, you dont indicate if going straight ahead, and you indicate left or right if going left or right.

You will in all cases indicate left to exit the roundabout.

The only thing i have never been sure of, is if there is 3 exits on the left, do you indicate left entering the roundabout, and then cancel it and turn it back on just before your exit, or leave it on the whole time till you reach your exit.

(If taking the 3rd exit on the left?) Enter the roundabout without any indication and indicate left as you cross the 2nd exit to take the 3rd.
