    This is a joke!

So every 'cheap' fare has now automatically attached itself to an additional fee of €18 per person return?

Surely as an airline are they not obliged to carry luggage for any passengers using their service, are they allowed to do this?

This decision will only suit business travellers on day trips!

you are only allowed to check in online so far beforehand upto a point too afaik? I used to be a ryanair fan but ive really gone off them of late.

Also whats the point of having priority boarding now as everyone will have it when they use the web checkin.

My thoughts exactly. I know ryanair couldn't care less about their customers but as a business decision this might not be the best idea. Adding this €18 euro to a return fee might get rid of their price advantage over someone like aer lingus.

I have used ryanair extensively over the past few years but nowadays seem to only use them for day trips (to england for sporting events etc) as when bringing luggage to check in I often find other airlines cheaper.

Just thinking, why haven't ryanair ever introduced the self check in machines that aer lingus and citijet have? They would cut down on staff numbers without p!ssing off customers. In terms of their closing check in 40 mins before departure, that could still be the case as the machines could surely be programmed to stop printing boarding passes for a flight 40 mins before departure.

True enough, but they won't make any extra money that way, will they!

    True!!!

Just that there's v little difference between making people check in online or having those machines in the airport.

So when I booked tickets back in August with Ryanair to fly in November and had to pay 12€ each way for 2 items of luggage, I'm now going to be hit with another 18€ each way to check these in even though I've already paid for the "privilege" of bringing luggage ?

Maybe O'Leary has a cunning plan to offer really cheap flights to people who are willing to bring their own sleeping bag and stay in the hold for the flight !?!

"The airline said this move was aimed particularly at families."

What kind of families travel with only hand luggage?

I think that was referring to the ability to purchase priority boarding seperately on-line. It used to be only available to those who weren't checking in luggage.

TBH, this doesn't bother me in the slightest. I'm a man, I can survive on whatever I can fit in a carry on bag for a month quite easily!

This is why I don't fly Ryanair anymore, no matter how cheap THEY SAY the flights are. Seriously, my life is better because of it!

No, it would be an extra €3 each way for using the check-in desks. Besides from reading the announcement on the ryanair website it only applies to new bookings made from Thursday, 20th September onwards so you should not have to pay any extra.

Because buying, running and maintaining these machines costs money, getting people to check-in online and print their own boarding cards doesn't. It also means that they can cut down further on check-in staff and those that are left will generate enough revenue to pay for themselves and add in more profit.

My understanding is that there will no longer be a charge for online check in, you only pay to check in at the desk. Ryanair admit they got it wrong and want to encourage online check in so no charge! Good one Ryanair.

    How would they be obliged?

You're paying for a seat. With other airlines, a luggage allowance is included in the price. Ryanair (and Aer Lingus etc) are saying they're are making no allowance (they key word) and are charging for any bags you bring.
