Fix broke USB stick

    Hi
Recently I snapped my USB stick and need to get it working again. I was told by a friend that by opening the USB casing and removing the main circuit board i could fix it. He said this could be done by taking a USB extension lead, exposing the 4 internal wires and soldering them to the USB circuit board, so that the USB would work again. Anyone here ever have any success with something like that?

    Thanks

When you say "snapped" what exactly do you mean?

Exactly. If you have just borken the connector off the board you may be able to get it working again by soldering wires directly onto the board. This may not work however. Very much dependant on how exactly you broke it.

    I think a photo's the best solution here. :)

that doesn't look hard, it all depends on what is broken on your usb key. As said above, post a pic.

Thats looks easy to do. If your in dublin i would be happy to do that for you.

You think it can be done? If you can see from the photo, a friend of mine slightly scorched part of the board with a bulky soldering iron. I also wonder does it matter what way the wires are arranged when soldered to the board, or must each wire be put in a specific place

Yep it will matter which way they are. It can be done with ease. Also how did your friend scorch the board ? Has he not soldered before? But sure if you want me to do this let me know.

Im in Galway so I dont think I could get to Dublin. My friend isnt the best with a soldering iron unfortunately! Will the scorch make a difference? How do u know what way to make sure the wires go?

Just scrape the scorch off. And re solder, Remember to heat the solder first, it makes it alot easier.

Thanks Anti, but how can I be sure of what colour wire to solder to where?

just do it the same way as what this guy has:

This link give info on the connector wiring.

You then need to determine which points on the circuit board are which lines.

It would stand to reason the the outside ones are probably power and ground, you just need to figure out which is which. This might be done by following the tracks on the board to see where they lead.

The other two middle lines should then be the data lines. Once you have figured out the power and ground you could just try these two data lines in both of the possible two configurations.

    Good look anyway.

Improperly wiring a USB port can result in permanent and fatal damage to the motherboard, the USB port and ANY peripheral connected to the motherboard.

Quote from the link , and this is true ,

So make pretty damn sure you have the wiring correct ( most important for power and make sure there are no shorts ) or you'll kill any pc you connect it too.

Do you have important data on it or something , USB sticks are not exactly expensive , so unless theres something vitally important on there Id chuck it and buy a new one.
