so i am flying out to america tomorrow and do you think i can find my drivers licence?

does anyone know of any car hire company that will hire a car without showing a licence? i am plan on going in to everywhere i can find and crying like a baby (not a pretty sight watching a grown man cry) and flashing the credit card around.

    I would *highly* doubt.

Save youself the trouble of crying, it's not going to be worth expending that energy.

You will be really crying if the US cops catch you driving without a licence.

On a side note; why is it that so many boardsters think that the week before they go away is the best time to check that they have valid passports, driving licences and other essential travel documents?

Not only that but some of places, esp. in the midwest aren't gonna serve you cigs or booze without a drivers licence. I've found that if the server hasn't seen a passport before (yes it can happen) then they won't know if it's fake or not and won't accept it.

    I'd say that it's 100% impossible to rent w/o a licence.

This is bang on. A huge percentage of Americans have never left the country therefore do not own a passport.

I showed my passport in a bar in Chicago and was refused, guy wanted to see driving licence - and let me tell you, I am no spring chicken and look WAY over 21 (hard working life :D )

If you were a bar person here in Ireland would you be able to identify if, for example, a Slovak passport was fake or not ?

I understand where you're coming from. Some people in the USA don't have a passport and have rarely seen them because they don't/won't travel often and in the past they never needed passports to get into Canada or Mexico. I wouldn't expect all Americans to recognise one but someone working in the service industry should have a better idea of what a typical passport looks like.

I for one think that I'd have no problem with a Slovak passport. I wouldn't know if it was fake or not (I wouldn't be able to tell a fake Irish from a real either for that matter) but I'd know that it was a passport and would probably accept it.

My wifes British drivers licence doesn't have her photo on it. I wonder if the barman in Chicago would have accepted that? :p

Why do you think we employ Slovaks and Lithuanians and Estonians and the like in Irish hotels and pubs? It's not because they are cheap and hard-working; it's for their knowledge of passports.

They might not have seen an irish driving license before, how would they (shops) know it was genuine.
