Bus into town (check www.dublinbus.ie) and then the Luas Green line from Stephens Green will take you to Ranelagh.

    Step 1:
LUAS Green line to St. Stephen's Green
    or
    11/11A/11B/44/44C/48A bus to city centre.

    Step 2:
Train to Leixlip (2 stations - (Confey to the north of Leixlip and Louisa Bridge to the west on the Leixlip/Maynooth road) from Pearse, Tara Street or Connolly
    or
66/66A/66B bus from Pearse Street or Westmoreland Street to Leixlip

The choice of bus/train will depend on where in Leixlip you need to go to.

There are trains starting from Connolly at 0535, 0610, 0640, 0710 and 0840.

Services from Pearse are at 0805 and 0915 and from Tara Street/Connolly a few minutes later. Journey time is approximately 30 minutes.

    Buses are as follows:
66 To Maynooth or Kilcock - operates straight through Leixlip
    Departures from Pearse Street at 0650, 0715, 0730, 0800, 0840, 0910.

66A - To River Forest - North of Leixlip village
Departures from Pearse Street at 0835, 0905

66B - To Castletown - southwest of Leixlip village beside HP facility
Departures from Pearse Street at 0710, 0755, 0925.

You can get a bus only ticket or combined bus/luas and bus/rail tickets and luas/rail tickets on a weekly basis, but a bus/rail/luas ticket is only available as an annual version.

The 11/11A/11B will leave you in Westmoreland Street where you can get the 66 group of routes. They operate roughly every 10 minutes through Ranelagh, turning right onto Appian Way and left onto Leeson Street. Journey time of about 15 minutes in the early morning.

The less frequent 44/44C/48A go straight through Ranelagh and stop at Pearse Station and near/on Westmoreland Street.

The 66 group should take about 45-50 minutes to get to Leixlip.

Maybe a bus to Pearse or Connolly train stations and then a Maynooth line to Leixlip.
If you are working in Intel I think that they have buses from the train station - ask your employer.
Moving to Phibsborough or Drumcondra would make the trip easier and still have a nice place to live.

I would seriously consider somewhere nearer the DART line.

If the job is permanent etc. he might be better off moving to Maynooth. It's a nicer town than Leixlip, only 40 mins from Tara Street by train (7 to Leixlip), and a lot cheaper than Ranelagh.
