Moped/scooter - pros: dirt cheap to buy, tax and and run. Dunno about insurance but it was very cheap when I had one about 9 years ago. No NCT applies. Great for city driving, you can just slice through traffic jams.

cons: Irish weather, no access to motorways, feck all load-carrying ability. Also any no claims bonus you build up on a motorcycle of any kind counts for NOTHING if and when you switch to a car.

car - pros: weatherproof :), ability to carry loads and passengers, can drive on motorways (with full licence). Creature comforts like heating and radio etc.

cons: much more expensive to run than a scooter, and depending on your age and circumstances and on the car may be ridiculously expensive to insure. Also much higher motor tax every year.

Can't see myself going back to a bike but if I was 16 again I'd still get myself a scooter.

It depends on what you need it for OP.

If your commute is across the city with heavy traffic and long delays then definitly get the moped. Plus you can get to use the bus lanes;)

But a moped is no good if you are using 100km/h roads or other high speed roads as you won't be able to keep up on a 50cc. 125cc may be better as it has better overall ability.

Don't let the Irish weather put you off. If you buy proper clothing the rain won't make much difference to you.

As said, it really does depend on what you need it for.

A commute of less than 20km each way, in a city, you can't beat a moped (except with a motorbike).

If you need to carry heavy stuff, travel long distances (> 50km) or spend a lot of time on motorways/dual carriageways, then you need a car.
