Cannot format hard drive?

I have an old 20GB ide(pata) Seagate hard drive and decided to throw it into my rig as a backup hard drive. Anyway every time I try to format it appears to be working away grand until it hits 99% when it just fails and throws back an error saying "Format did NOT complete successfully". I tried using Windows disk manager and also Partition manager 8 but the result is the same for both. I also used the windows utility for scanning the disk for errors and the seagate utility, they both say its fine.

    Other things I have tried
    - Made sure the jumpers are set correct for this drive as it is on the slave connection while my DVD drive is on the master.
    - Tried formatting in FAT32 instead of NTFS but still the same error.

I'm at a bit of loss here. Any ideas anyone?

Maybe try to format it on another machine if possible.

Run a drive diagnostic, sounds like it may be faulty. Maxtor have a good one called powermax. Maybe try format using fdisk from dos first.

Cool I'll give those suggestions a go and if there is still no joy then I reckon its heading for the bin!
