You just need to contact the Chinese Embassy in Shrewsbury Road or download a tourist visa form from the their site. Then you just bring the completed form, a passport photo, your passport and a copy of your ticket/flight confirmation to the Embassy and they will have it for you in 3 working days. It only opens until 12pm and is only open 4 days a week (can't remember which day it closes).

Seriously crowded city - very cosmopolitan. If you're looking for food and drink, Frenchtown is the place to go.

It will be very cold there compared to the temps you will be leaving in NZ.

If your stopover is less than 48 hours you may not need a visa. The embassy will be able to help you.
