Laminate Oak for Stairs

Saw a program on TV this morning called How to Build a House and the people who were building the house were using laminate oak wood planks for the treads in the stairs. Looked good and the guy who was making the stairs said they were more solid than regular planks. Has anyone come across these and what would be the pros…
