Yes, I know it's crazy. But I'd like a very long period of being far away from everything, followed by a period in Japan. Anyone got any idea how I'd go about finding out where to sail from/to and how to book, et c.?

I tried Googling, but didn't really get any positive results.

Maybe not all the way by boat, i would imagine a cruise of that sort would be very expensive and getting on a frieght type carrier would be difficult.

How about travelling to China from London by train then getting the boat to Japan , ive travelled to Iran from London and its an incredible journey , next April I shall be travelling from China back to Ireland overland.

For lots of great info , check www.seat61.com

I did see a round the world cruise in the paper a while back. It takes about 3-4 months and goes from Southampton in the UK. Costs about £25,000 sterling, though. :)

When I win the Lotto, I'll be on it.

most freight ships have at least 5 cabins for paying passengers. My brother did this to go to Argentina. It's not cheap, as in it costs more than the plane ticket, but for isolation and a great experience (you usually have dinner with the crew), it's second to none.

for an idea of how it works go to http://www.cargolines.biz/Site%20Map.htm

I used to work on "freight" ships and there are actually only a tiny number of ships that carry passengers. My mate still works for a company that does this and he tells me it's ridiculously expensive for what you get and very boring as it's a working ship as apposed to a floating holiday camp/hotel.

I would recommend a ferry instead, they go from a variety of surrounding countries, lots of info via google

Any luck on the boat to Japan, would be something I would love to do when I am heading home. I think the train might be the easiest option. My brother is on route to Chind by bike he hopes to make it from Sandyford to China in a Year in time for beijing 2008. He is doing it with two friends for charity. Have a look at http://www.biketobeijing2008.com/ if you get a minute.
