The NTL box probably only outputs RGB and/or composite video. What exactly is your "scart to 3 component" adaptor for? YPbPr?

the scart should output the video signal to the av (it is input into the component video for dtv/cable) and in turn send it to the tv via hdmi connection but all i can get is a blank screen. sound is ok as that is sent through the optical output. could i maybe have the wrong scart? excuse my ignorance, what is ypbpr?

When you output the audio like this, does the volume control and mute function?

Also, what do you currently have your ntl: box set to? RGB or composite? Pop the box back directly onto the TV via the SCART and check that it's set to RGB first before anything else. You'll also need what is called a fully-wired SCART to be able to carry the RGB signal as well.

YPbPr is what is called component video, which isn't the same as pure RGB (AFAIK, I'm not an expert).

the audio can only be controlled via the av
the stb is set to rgb and it is a fully wired scart

Does your AV receiver accept RGB video? What kind of adaptor are you using, and what kind of inputs are they going to in the receiver?

composite video in and HDMI out to your TV, have you checked to see if the upconversion for that source input is switched on?

Hi there, did you get sorted out ??
Only easy way to solve this is digital connection via amp and direct connection to TV via scart.
The scart lead you have is only for outputting Component from a DVD scart. The RGB that NTL uses or Sky for that matter is in fact an RGBS signal.
Keene electronics in the uk sell a RGBS to component converter
    I hope this helps
