"More than 330 schools participated in the research, with approximately 14,000 pupils completing questionnaires."

I hope these results are incorrect, otherwise I'm going to be very disappointed in our young people. Less drinking, less smoking, wearing mullets - I weep for our youth. We need a good war to put them back on the straight and narrow.

They're probably all doing drugs instead...

Tis true folks. This study is undertaken every four years and while there will always be a certain amount of messers the huge sample size makes up for that. Even with messers/ spoilt questionnaire you can still see trends.

    Smoking: 1998: 21%, 2002: 19.6%, 2006: 15% (NB.This increases to 25% in 15-17 year olds).

I don't know the drinking figures.... didn't think it had actually decreased according to what I had read but I could be wrong.

Yeah drugs are the new cool thing to do.... Why waste money on drink or fags when you can get smoked or bombed out of it every weekend?? :D

Nope: Cannabis use figures have stayed the same except in boys 15-17 where it has dropped by 6%.
I don't know the figures for other drugs. Just accept it... You young people are becoming health conscious!

Ha ha, I'm afraid I'm not what you'd call a young person :)

Cannabis use will never be properly documented because for the amount of kids who say they do it, the same amount don't want anybody to know.

I wouldn't be totally surprised tbh.

My bro recently turned 18 recently and while he and his m8's do drink they don't seem to drink anywhere near the amounts my m8's and i did at that age.

I mean he'd go out on a fri/sat night quite often, come home fairly late yet still be sober. Lack of money probably has a lot to do with it, he spends it all on clothes.

They've just shifted their addiction to the web.

True but over time you're still seeing trends... whether the change in trend is due to more or less kids doing it or more or less kids saying they're doing it is open to speculation. I can't see why the trend in admitting to something or not would change over time though?

What are m8's and where can you get them?

I remember doing a survey like this. Must have been around 1990, if they are done every 4 years.
I was probably honest, but I can't really remember all the details.

I would like to think less and less people are smoking particularly those under 18. I'm a 20 year old smoker and am finding it hard to stop. I have little problem with 17 year olds getting a little drunk but I find something wrong with seeing 15 year olds on the street hammered. Just looks wrong.

I think they are 2 for a pound in your local market.

I'm trying to cut out "txt" speak (tbh i learnt it on the internet well before texting become popular) but as you can see i relapse occasionally :(
With your help Terry i'll beat my addiction!

The phasing out of 10 packs would also be to do with it. As well as that newsagents are tighter these days. When i was young anyone aged 6 and up could buy smokes, you just said they were for your mother. I know at least one lad smoking since he was 7 and most other smokers i know started at 9 or 10. But since growing older myself i honestly cant ever recall seeing a kid younger than 12 or 13 smoking.

Drug use surveys in this country always turn up some bizarre results. I think I read one stating something like 4% of males aged 18-35 had tried cocaine. More than 4% have probably tried their hand at selling coke, never mind merely using. Another survey i read (of UCD students) stated 10% had tried pills and coke, and over 60% knew somebody who had. Are they saying that 40% of UCD students have never known anyone who took said drugs? Are this 40% all kept in one secluded section of the campus away from the rest?

Not necessarily. The 40% (or some of) may just have preferred not to answer the question.

In fairness, unless the survey demands the parents names and numbers Im puzzled as to why anyone would bother lying.

meh, cannabis related paranoia i suppose *legalise d`herb boards contingent preparing 5 page rant in 3...2...1...and WAFFLE!*

Theres not much difference between 15 and 17

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,794 ✭✭✭JC 2K3

Nonsense. There's generally a huge difference in terms of maturity between a 15 year old and a 17 year old.

That's strange considering they said on the radio just yesterday that more 15-17 year olds drink regularly

Come over to where I live and spend and evening, the teenagers are nutters, the drink everyday ! the amount of drink they go through is staggering, some of them only 12 or 13 yrs old, out of their heads, pissed as farts. Then they start smashing stuff, or fighting. Sometimes they just fall over. If it wasnt for the council doing their weekly clear up of sweet wrappers, snackboxes, beer cans, smirnoff ice and vodka bottles, we wouldnt be able to get down the road for all the rubbish. They will all have liver diseases by the time they are 20 years old.

I read a different article, either on breakingnew.ie or RTe as they're the only news sites i read in work that young people are smoking less but drinking more. Now that I can believe. I enjoyed the underage drinking back in the day but there was no way any of us were as bad as you what you see now, I mean I used to get drunk on west coast cooler! That's pretty innocent!
