Old emails returning

Can anyone explain why, as I write this, my Mail inbox and junk and thrash are filling up with old emails from months back? All the stuff I've deleted is now back where it started and I'm snowed under!

On another note, last week I set some rules for certain junk mail to go straight to the Trash box. The only problem is, they cause an alert sound now, where they didn't when going into junk. I notice there's an option for to play sound 'when' but no option to not play sound. It's probably something very simple that I'm not seeing, but frustration is obscuring my vision.

    Thank you

    Damo

Perhaps your settings in Mail are leaving the mails on your mail server and now they are being downloaded again??

Check that the tick box for 'remove copy from server' is ticked (preferences/accounts/advanced) - careful though, if you do this you won't see these downloaded mails on a webmail interface for example.

    Thanks Katie,

I've done that, hopefully I won't be seeing that happen again.

Any advice on disarming the alert sound for new mail diverted to trash?

Have you a rule set for Trash to play sound?? If so just remove this rule using the '-' button, or if you cannot remove it, edit the rule to do something else instead of play a sound.

I'm not sure I'm interpreting the problem correctly though.
