Decomposing DVD-R's?

I have a lot of burned DVD's from three or four years ago. I've read that some DVDR brands only last a few years before they become unreadable.

Is this true? Should I start transferring everything back to HDD? With 1TB for €195, it seems like a good option.

Has anyone here any experience with losing data from DVD-R's due to age? How long did they last?

It depends on the quality of the disk. Some cheapy discs will start to lose their integrity after a few months. That would be anything manufactured by CMC (could have many brandnames). Or anything you might have got in a €2 shop or other bargain/casual shop.

Not quite what you're looking for, but I did once lose data on decayed CD-Rs - a friend was throwing them out a few years ago because they were too crappy to work on his older and highly sensitive CDRW drive, I had just got a new CDRW drive for the first time, and hadn't any problems with them so I took his off his hands. Needless to say the discs did not stand the test of time.

Fortunately I was able to either salvage or replace most of what was on there.

You should refresh your collection - burn whatever data you now have to new discs. Get advice here as to the most robust brand.
