3 year warranty for Educational Purchase?

I really hope this hasn't been asked before, but I couldn't find it, so let's just hope it hasn't.I'll be going to college in a months time (UCC). I was just wondering if a 3 year warranty is included as standard if you purchase through a college? I rang apple, and they said, no, the person on the other end said, no, only in the US, but I found out recently, that the 3 year warranty is included in the UK if you are registered at a qualifying institution, so I'm hoping that the guy on the phone got it wrong, or that at least the stores in the college intranet have the 3 year as standard. (Seems rightly unfair if it isn't included - considering it's in both the UK and the US)

It's just that, if I don't have to spring for applecare, I'll just about be able to afford a macbook pro base model - which would be sweet, since I'll be living on the thing for the next 3 years, whereas if I have to spring for applecare, I'll have to go for the macbook (and upgrade the ram myself).

(And I know, it's questionable does a college student need a pro, and truth be told, I'd get away with the macbook, but I'd really like the extra screen real estate, a proper gpu would be nice, and led backlighting, well you know - and since all my work will be on computer for the next while, I'd be willing to pay up to about 1,700).

    no standard 3 yr warranty.

i'm afraid you gotta pony up for the protection plan.....sorry man

its not unfair - you'll probably find that they're paying for it in the price of the units. In my institution there is an option to get the extended warranty on both PCs and Macs BUT we have to pay for it.

Thanks for the clarification. Guess the Macbook it is then, which is ok I guess, but I'd really have liked the pro.

The annoying thing about the UK and US is that their prices aren't bumped up at all. The US prices are way cheaper when you do the currency conversion, and both in the US and UK they get like 17% off the standard price, and get a 3 year warranty as standard (as in no additional cost) if their college or university are registered with apple. And if they want 3 years phone support aswell as the 3 year warranty, they only have to pay like $70 or something fairly small.

Anyway, I'm off to brood. Wanted to find out before I started, and I can't access the college intranet a while, since I'm not at the college, and haven't been registered, so thanks again for the clarification.
